LONDON -- A train on London's Underground hit a tunnel wall and derailed Saturday, starting a fire and injuring 16 people, police and the fire service said.

British Transport Police said there did not appear to be any life-threatening injuries, and a woman who answered the phone at the Fire Brigade operations desk said those led to safety had been able to walk.

London's Underground system is the world's oldest and is often criticized for poor maintenance.
