Glenneta Vogelsang of Cape Girardeau was among approximately 5,000 who participated in the 84th National Convention of the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The convention was held Aug. 16-21 at Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Vogelsang will serve the auxiliary as a member of the National Special Events Committee in 1997-98. She is a past national president of the auxiliary.

Presentations included $5,000 to the University of Utah for cancer research, $10,000 to the American Cancer Society to support its nationwide educational program, and the recognition of six young people who have won national scholarships from the auxiliary during the past year.

Members voted on bylaws revisions, viewed the top five winning entries in the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest, and attended a memorial service at the Mormon Temple and attended a patriotic rally.

The People Loving People for A Brighter Tomorrow Award was presented to Della Reese, who sings the theme song and stars as Tess on the television drama "Touched By An Angel." Reese has been minister of the Understanding Principles for Better Living Church in Los Angeles 14 years.

Deborah Stephenson of Charleston, S.C., received the Unsung Hero Award for her efforts to help children with cancer.

The convention concluded with the election and installation of Connie Atkinson of Conway, Ark., as national president for 1997-98.
