Betty J. Brooks has been elected to membership in Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Brooks was inducted as an undergraduate student through Lambda Theta Chapter at Southeast Missouri State University May.
Sigma Theta Tau International is a prestigious organization of nurse leaders, scholars and researchers. The honor society, founded at Indiana University in 1922, currently has 356 chapters at more than 400 colleges and universities in Australia, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States. The society has over 230,000 members that live in 73 countries.
Membership in the society is awarded to bachelor's, master's and doctoral nursing candidates who achieve high scholastic averages, and to graduates of nursing programs who have made outstanding contributions to nursing. The undergraduate student must have at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and be in the upper 35 percent of his/her graduating class to qualify for membership.
Sigma Theta Tau International encourages and actively supports further professional development and promotes nursing scholarship, leadership, creativity and commitment to nursing among its members.
The Sigma Theta Tau International Center for Nursing Scholarship and Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library are located in Indianapolis, Indiana. The honor society is committed to improving the health of the public by advancing nursing science. Sigma Theta Tau International sponsors nursing research, produces various publications and hosts scholarly programs on the international, national, regional and local levels.
The library, one of the first of its kind, uses state-of-the-art communications technology and is a computerized collection of databases and resources that enhance access to nursing knowledge. The library also serves as a means of inforining the public of the latest breakthroughs in nursing research and knowledge.
