Four local teachers participated in the 1992 Missouriana Studytour, learning first-hand how business operates, June 22 through July 3.
Betty Landre, second grade teacher, Teri Jones, fourth grade teacher, Cheryl Crouch, learning disabilities teacher, all from Charles Clippard Elementary School, and Thomas Miller, math and physical education teacher at L.J. Schultz school attended.
The two-week studytour is sponsored by the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.
The program is designed to give teachers a firsthand view of business, how it works and the problems it faces.
"We find that many teachers who cover economic materials in their classrooms have little knowledge of the subject beyond theory," said Larry Jones professor of computer and office information systems at Central Missouri State University. "The studytour shows them economics in action."
David Lankford, vice president of education for the Missouri Chamber of Commerce, said, "They visit various types of businesses. While touring facilities, they talk with both management and employees to learn about the problems and challenges that business and industry face today."
Teachers who participate in the tour may receive three semester hours of credit. Businesses offer scholarships to teachers to cover two-thirds of the cost of the program.
