A Cape Girardeau student was one of 153 outstanding high school students from throughout the Southeast who participated in activities and competed for scholarships at Scholars' Day at the Mississippi University for Women.

Carrie Patterson, of 1927 Grandview, served as Cape Girardeau's representative to the conference.

Students with an ACT score of 24 or above were invited to the annual event, which is sponsored by the university Office of Enrollment Management. Participants had the opportunity to learn more about the university's academic programs, sample some university extracurricular activities and be interviewed to determine scholarship winners.

"The students who attended Scholars' Day are top students throughout the Southeastern United States," said Melanie Freeman, director of admissions for the university. "They excel in academics, extracurricular activities, leadership roles and community involvement."

Patterson, a student at Cape Central High School,is the daughter of Pat and Edna Patterson.
