Local ice skating pair Matt Buttrey and Sarah Booth will appear in three ice shows in May. The pair have been asked to skate in an ice show at the Brentwood Ice Arena on May 16.

They have also been asked to skate at a show at the Creve Coeur ice rink on May 17 at 3 p.m. and at a benefit ice skating show for Children's Hospital the same day at 6 p.m.

The skaters have been busy over the past year. The youngsters were silver medalists at the United States Figure Skating Association Intermediate Nationals held at Monsey, N.Y. in April 1991.

In July, the pair tested to novice level at the Indiana World Skating Academy. In August they competed in their first international pairs competition, "The Indy Challenge," at Indianapolis, Ind., and won a silver medal.

In October they competed in the first of the qualifying events of the year toward national competition, the United States Figure Skating Association Upper Great Lakes Regionals at Kenosha, Wis. Competing at this meet were the top skaters from a 10-state region. Booth and Buttrey placed second, qualifying them to compete at the Midwestern Sectionals at Cleveland, Ohio.

The competitors at the sectional event are finalists of three regions representing 37 states. They placed fifth, and were the first alternates to the national competition. The top four pairs advance in the competition.

Booth and Buttrey also compete in singles skating events. Buttrey recently placed fourth in novice figures at regionals which qualified him to compete at midwestern sectionals.

Both skaters will be working on higher level figures, jumps and overhead lifts this year.
