They may not be doggie biscuits, but aluminum cans are the preferred treat of adoptable animals at the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.
Through Nov. 30, the shelter will recycle aluminum cans in a communitywide drive to raise money.
The drive is part of a nationwide aluminum can recycling program called "Paws to Recycle." The local shelter will earn operating money and free Friskies pet food for participating. It will compete with other shelters across the country to win one of five $3,000 grand prizes.
"By recycling aluminum cans we hope to raise extra funds to care for the animals," said Cindy Lange, program coordinator for the shelter. "We always need cleaning supplies like bleach, laundry detergent, hoses, hose nozzles, et cetera, along with drugs, pet foods and treats for the animals."
The shelter depends on fund-raising events and contributions for its operating money.
"We need as much community support as possible," Lange said. "We're asking animal lovers throughout the area to donate their used aluminum food and beverage cans to the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri during this very important drive time."
The shelter will accept cans. Individuals may also take cans to Sides Metal Recycling, 80 N. Broadview in Cape Girardeau. Those taking their cans to Sides must specify that the money received for the cans be sent to the shelter.
