Twenty-two area high school students attended the American Legion Boys State of Missouri held at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.
Boys State is designed to educate young men about duties, privileges, responsibilities and rights of American citizenship. More than 960 boys attended this 60th year of the program.
In a hands-on exercise, participants created their own 51st state government including a court system, executive branch, media, legislature, and law enforcement.

Oliver Sanders of Notre Dame High School is a member of SADD, FBLA and takes German classes at Southeast Missouri State University. A soccer player, Sanders was named high school first all-conference team in 1997 and 1998, first all-district team in 1998 and first all-state team in 1998. He was named MVP and best midfielder of the year and participated in the Missouri Olympic Development team in 1997 and 1998. He won first place at the Regional Science Fair in 1995 and 1996 and was a participant in the 1996 International Science Fair. He is the son of Harry and Anna Sanders of Cape Girardeau and was sponsored by the Evening Exchange Club of Cape Girardeau. He was elected state representative and city councilman at Boys State.
Michael Gosche of Notre Dame High School plays varsity soccer and basketball. He is a member of the Concert Choir and has helped in the production of the school's musical. He also does volunteer coaching. He attends St. Ambrose parish in Chaffee and is the son of Larry and Bonnie Gosche. He was sponsored by VFW Post 7183.
Morgan R. Maki of Cape Central High School where he is on the honor roll, has perfect attendance and competes in tennis, swimming and cross country. He is a member of the French club, Scholar Bowl, Beta Club, Student Senate, Young Life, and the gifted program. He competed in Chemistry Bowl. He attends Christ Episcopal Church in Cape Girardeau and is a member of the youth group. He is the son of Allan Maki and Nancy Welsh and was sponsored by the American Legion District 14.
Michael Sirimaturos of Notre Dame High School where he is president of Future Business Leaders of America, president of National Honor Society, a member of the Projects Club and on the A honor roll. He is involved in school musical, a member of Concert Choir and received top honors at district and state choral competitions. He is a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church and the youth group. He has participated in the group's mission trips. He also taught the Postponing Sexual Involvement at local grade schools and is a junior volunteer at Southeast Missouri Hospital. He was recognized by the Cape Girardeau Evening Optimists for community service. He is the son of Chris Sirimaturos and was sponsored by Cape Girardeau VFW Post 3838.
Matthew R. Wormington of Scott City High School has lettered in football two years and participated in Future Business Leaders of America, FTA, Science Club, Key Club, National Honor Society, honor roll and was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students. He served as FBLA parliamentarian. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of Scott City and has played church league basketball. He is the son of Marvin and Cheryl Wormington and was sponsored by Scott City Schools.
Brian Tenkhoff of Cape Central High School earned football varsity letters as a sophomore and junior and will serve as captain of the football team for the 1999-2000 year. He also participates in weight lifting. He is a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and is vice president of the church's youth group. He is a member of Centenary's Youth Ensemble. He is the son of Mark and Cathy Tenkhoff and was sponsored by Cape Girardeau West Rotary Club.
Josh Pfefferkorn of Jackson High School ranks second in his class. He has been on the Scholastic and A honor rolls. He has been active in Future Business Leaders of America and serves as state president, district 15 president and local chapter president for the 1999-2000 year. He is also co-captain of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, team leader for the mentoring program Hi-Step, group leader for Jackson Organization of Concerned Kids, treasurer of National Honor Society, and a member of Spanish Club and Student Council. He is also an honorary peer tutor. He received a National Scholar nomination by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council in 1999 and is a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Jackson. He is the son of John and Brenda Pfefferkorn and was sponsored by American Legion Post 158 in Jackson. He was elected mayor at Boys State.
Ross Redfearn of Cape Central High School was class president in ninth, 10th and 11th grades, secretary of the BETA Club, vice president of FBLA, president of Student Senate, a member of Citizens In Action, marching band, jazz band, salsa band and National Honor Society. He participated in the Model United Nations and the Mock Constitutional Convention. He ranks in the top 10 percent of his class and has been named Student of the Month. He is the son of Karen and Mike Redfearn and was sponsored by American Legion Post 63.
Tommy Wencewicz of Notre Dame High School is active in baseball, soccer and fishing. He attends St. Vincent de Paul Church. He is the son of Tom and Dotty Wencewicz and was sponsored by Cape Girardeau Lions Club.
Jason Jones of Jackson High School is a varsity football letterman, varsity track letterman and a member of Spanish Club, J-Club, Hi-Step, FCA and the A honor roll. He is a member of the United Church of Christ and was sponsored by the Jackson Optimist Club.
Scott Reinagel of Notre Dame High School lettered in JV and Varsity baseball and was named all-conference baseball honorable mention in 1998 and all-conference baseball first team in 1999. He lettered in JV and varsity basketball. He was a member of the Pan-American and World Baseball Team in 1996. He is a member of Boys of Baseball Junior Olympic Tournament in 1997 and 1998. He is a member of the Mixed Chorus and Concert Choir and has participated in school musicals. A member of St. Vincent de Paul Church, he volunteers with Vincent's Vittles, Merilac's Movables and The Village of the Blue Rose, an adult mentally handicapped respite center. His family has been honored by Random Acts of Kindness in 1997, local and state Family of the Month by the Knights of Columbus, and state Family of the Year by the Knights of Columbus in 1998. His family was third runner up for National Family of the Year. He also participates in St. Francis Medical Center's Perpetual Devotion Chapel each Sunday at 8 a.m. He is the son of Tom and Susan Reinagel and was sponsored by Cape Girardeau Elks Lodge 639.
Edward Allan Roeger of Cape Central High School is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, Scholar Bowl and competes in tennis and cross country. He is a member of La Croix United Methodist Church and is the son of Bob and Libby Roeger. He was sponsored by Cape Girardeau Rotary Club.
Ross Conner of Cape Central High School is captain of the varsity basketball team, plays varsity football and competes in track and field. He is a member of a community youth choir and the New Bethel Baptist Church youth choir. He is a member of FBLA, National Honor Society and Beta Club. He was named Southeast Missouri Conference Player of the Year for basketball for the 1998-99 season. He was named most courteous boy in his sophomore and junior class. He was also named to Who's Who Among American High School Students. He was a state track and field qualifier in the 4x100m relay in 1998. He is the son of Ross and Marlena Conner and was sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Breakfast Optimist Club.
Tim Robert of Notre Dame High School is a member of the soccer team, National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Concert Choir, and the A honor roll. He participated in math field day, youth in government day, and is a Bright Flight scholar. He was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students. He is a member of St. Mary Cathedral and plays church league basketball and sand volleyball. He is the son of Richard and Linda Robert and was sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Optimist Club.
Dusty L. Statler of Oak Ridge High School is interested in computers, animals and designing structures. He is a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson. He is the son of Randy and Sherri Statler and was sponsored by Lamplighters Extension Club of Oak Ridge.
Greg Miller of Cape Central High School is a member of National Beta Club and National Honor Society. He competed in Math Field Day, FBLA district competitions and Chemistry Bowl. He is secretary of the Future Business Leaders of America and a Missouri Scholars Academy alum. He was listed in Who's Who Among American Scholars and is a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He is the son of Hershel and Barbara Miller and was sponsored by Cape Girardeau Kiwanis Club.
Adam Sherinski of Jackson High School is a member of the Student Council and served as sophomore class president and junior class president and senior member. He ranks in the top 5 percent of his class and is a member of First Christian Church Disciples of Christ and is a Youth Diaconate. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sherinski and was sponsored by American Legion Post 158 of Jackson.
Warren J. Williams of Cape Central High School is a member of the cross country track team and the swimming team. He is also an Eagle Scout and plays guitar. He is the son of Craig and Robin Williams and was sponsored by Cape Girardeau Lions Club.
Adam Gardiner of Notre Dame High School is on the B honor roll, participates in school plays and received the American Citizenship Award. He is the son of Oscar and Mary Gardiner and was sponsored by Louis K. Juden Post 63 American Legion in Cape Girardeau.
Trent Miller of Jackson High School is an Eagle Scout, a member of Future Business Leaders of America, Hi-Step, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Spanish Club publications chairman. He plays football and church league basketball. He is the son of Marsha Sander and the late Bruce Miller. He was sponsored by Jackson Rotary Club.
Tom Dohogne Jr. of Cape Central High School is a member of the gifted program, French Club, the cross country and swim teams. He participated in the Optimist Club Youth in Government Day and is a member of Lynwood Baptist Church. He is the son of Tom and Brenda Dohogne and was sponsored by Cape Girardeau VFW Post 3838.
Brooks Whitlow of Meadow Heights High School is on the Superintendent's Honor Roll, received the President's Academic Award, was named to the United States Achievement Academy, an All-American Scholar and to Who's Who Among American High School Students. He was a recipient of the National Science Merit Award and the National Young Leader Award. He received the I DARE YOU Leadership Award, attended Sophomore Pilgrimage, Farm Bureau Youth Leadership Day, and Math Field Day. He is in the concert band, marching band and pep band, a member of BETA Club, Science Club and the yearbook staff. He is a member of his church youth group, the church orchestra and the church softball team. He was a Nazarene Youth Congress participant in Toronto, Canada. He is the son of John and Regina Whitlow and was sponsored by Patton Lions Club.
