Many think of Christmas as a time of toys, but for some elderly residents in Cape Girardeau County, their Christmas wish is for laundry detergent and paper towels. For those living on a limited income, items like soap, toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dishwashing items, blankets and pillows are priceless commodities.
The Christmas for the Elderly program began 25 years ago and is sponsored by the Southeast Missourian and the Cape Girardeau Jaycees. Applications are taken through the Missouri Division of Senior Services for elderly residents in Cape Girardeau County.
"This year's need is greater than ever," said John McGowan of the United Way, "and we have fewer resources than ever before. Our bank account is down 20 percent from last year at this time, and this is when we are really needing the help. We want to help as many elderly people as possible who need these basic items. Last year we were able to serve 40 elderly people. But unless our donations go up, this year we'll only be able to serve 20 with another 20 on a waiting list."
The program's intention is to help elderly people who live independently but who may not have any family to help them. Some may receive the help of a caregiver to make meals and help around the house, but because assistance like food stamps doesn't pay for toiletry items or cleaning supplies, they are lacking those basic items.
"We have people put these items on their Christmas wish list, not some special treat or item for under the tree, but things they need to keep healthy and clean," McGowan said. "There is an enormous need for everyday items in their households."
One such applicant lists everyday supplies such as paper towels and laundry detergent as the only thing she really needs. At 91 years old, she has limited vision and high blood pressure. A gift basket of a turkey or ham would be a really special treat for Christmas.
The program tries to provide a basic list of necessities for each elderly person including a blanket and pillow, toilet paper, paper towels, but with fewer donations it's hard to provide even these basic things. Increased donations would ensure that each person on the list would receive the basics for keeping their homes clean and healthy. "We try to provide a little treat or something nice for each person," McGowan said, "but the priority is the basic necessities. We're trying to help the neediest of the needy."
Cash donations as well as gift cards are also appreciated.
Items most needed are laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, cleaning supplies such as mops, sponges, disinfectant wipes, paper towels, toothpaste, toilet paper, bath soap, hand soap, brand new pillows and blankets. Donations can be brought to the Southeast Missourian, 601 Broadway. Monetary donations can be mailed to Christmas for the Elderly, P.O. Box 4, Cape Girardeau, MO 63702.
