DORENA, Mo. -- Loaded semitrailers are again crossing the Mississippi River by way of the Dorena-Hickman Ferry. Water levels on the river have returned to near normal levels following the summer drought that halted ferry operations for about a month earlier this year. The ferry was closed from July 23-Aug. 8 because of low river levels. When the drought conditions eased and water levels on the Cairo, Ill., gauge inched above the 10-foot mark, the Dorena-Hickman Ferry resumed operations. However, traffic was restricted to passenger vehicles and box trucks. The gauge at Cairo rose to almost 16 feet by the end of the week, allowing the ferry to resume service for heavier trucks. The ferry connects Highway 1354 at Hickman, Ky., with Route A and Highway 77 near Dorena, and is the only direct route between the two states. For more on the Dorena-Hickman Ferry and a schedule of operating hours go to www.dorena-hickmanferryboat.com. Motorists can also check on the ferry's operating status by calling 731-693-0210.
