The Missouri Division of the American Cancer Society and Glaxo Inc., will hold a noncompetitive, five-mile move-along-a-thon Sept. 15 in most areas. Participants may walk, run, wheelchair or roller skate in any of the 16 sites where the event will take place.

The event, "Making Strides Against Cancer," is an awareness activity for everyone, including cancer patients, recovered cancer patients, their family and friends and communities to celebrate the reality that cancer can be beaten.

The event will raise money for the American Cancer Society's programs of research, education and patient services. Participants pay a $5 registration fee and collect sponsors. They may complete as much of the route as they like.

"It is a sponsorship, not a pledge-per-mile event," explained Robyn Smith, 1991 American Cancer Society Making Strides chairperson. "It emphasizes the starting line, not the finish line.

"When you're at the event, you probably won't know who has had cancer and who hasn't. That's the whole point."

Making Strides will be held in Cape Girardeau, Center, Cystal City-Festus, Hannibal, Jefferson City, Kahokia, Kirksville, Lebanon, Moberly, Poplar Bluff, Shelbina, Sikeston, Stockton and Warrensburg. It will also be held in Joplin on Sept. 7 and in Sarcoxie on an October date to be announced.

To register to participate or to volunteer to assist with Making Strides, interested persons should call their local American Cancer Society office.
