Though power is being restored rapidly within the city of Cape Girardeau, spotty outages are expected to last throughout Thursday. Temperatures will dip into the 20s tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

The elderly, small children and infants are extremely susceptible to cold temperatures, according to the They should stay indoors at temperatures above 70 degrees. Dress appropriately to go outside, layering clothing. Remember (to quote your mom), wear a hat.
The city of Cape Girardeau has asked area churches and members of the public to check on the welfare and members. The city would also like to encourage residents to check on their family members and neighbors frequently. Encourage those without heat to visit a warming center or overnight shelter.

"We do have the ability to shelter overnight if need be. We have shelters that can be set up in a minute's notice," said Joel Evans, Scott County emergency management director. "There's been a lot of neighbors checking on neighbors."

The City of Cape Girardeau is working together with the Red Cross and the Cape County Transit Authority to help provide transportation for those in need of a warm place to stay.
