Lincoln's Journey boat to make stops in New Madrid, Caruthersville

A pioneer-era flatboat retracing Abraham Lincoln’s historic 1828 trip from Rockport, Ind., to New Orleans will make stops in Southeast Missouri today and Saturday. The boat will make riverfront stops at 4 p.m. today in New Madrid and at 3 p.m. Saturday in Caruthersville. The boat set sail in Rockport, Ind., Sept. 9 and will make its final stop of the trip in New Orleans. The event is a recreation of the former U.S. president’s trip where he witnessed his first slave auction while in New Orleans, an event that cemented his anti-slavery views. At each stop, the public can visit an informational tent featuring an educational display about Lincoln’s life in Indiana.
