Cape Girardeau native and conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh can add another title to his repertoire: award-winning children's author.

He was presented the Children's Choice Book Award for author of the year Wednesday for his book "Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims: Time Travel Adventures with Exceptional Americans."

The Amazon best-seller tells the story of history teacher Rush Revere and his talking horse Liberty as they travel through time to meet the pilgrims after their Mayflower voyage. The book is targeted to children between the ages of 7 and 12.

Finalists for author of the year are determined solely based on titles' performances on the best-seller lists, according to a letter from prize organizers Children's Books Council and Every Child a Reader. The winner then is selected by an online vote, a method organizers tout as a way for winners to be chosen by children and teens.

After accepting the award, Limbaugh said it was unexpected, but a thrill.

"I love America. I wish everybody did. I hope everybody will," he said. "It's one of the most fascinating stories of human history. ... And it's a delight and it's an opportunity to try and share that story with young people so that they grow and learn to love and appreciate the country in which they're growing up, and will someday run and lead and inherit."
