BERLIN -- Prosecutors demanded life in prison Thursday for four of the five suspects in a 1986 Berlin discotheque bombing that the United States blamed on Libya.
The April 5, 1986 bombing at a West Berlin hangout for U.S. military personnel killed two American servicemen and a young Turkish woman, wounded 229 people and led to retaliatory U.S. airstrikes on two Libyan cities.
Like the Sept. 11 attacks, the La Belle disco bombing was directed against the United States and "aimed at unsuspecting, innocent people," Mehlis said. "Two of the dead were also here to protect our freedom."
