The Riverside Regional Library has named eight local children as winners in its "Bird Coloring Contest"
Children named as first place winners in the contest, which included entrants from three area counties, were Jennifer Watson, Dakota Watson, Megan Glueck, Kala Longman, J.P. Thompson, Kelli Grantham, Jenise Lichtenegger, Nicholas Biri, Ashley Schott, Michelle Birk and Kristen Bundy.
Ashley Schott, Dakota Watson, and Kala Longman took first place in the category for children 4 years old and younger by coloring hummingbirds, house sparrows and blue jays. Megan Glueck, J.P. Thompson and Jennifer Watson won in the 5- to 6-year-old category with renderings of house sparrows, mockingbirds and bluejays. Kelli Grantham's bluejay won in the 11- 12-year-old category while Nicholas Biri, Jenise Lichtenegger, Michelle Birk and Kristen Bundy won in the 13 and up division with house sparrows, mockingbirds, bluejays and sparrow hawks.
The eight were chosen from more than 500 entrants in the coloring contest sponsored by the Riverside Regional Libraries in Perry, Cape and Scott counties. Participants in the contest had to visit the library one time each week for six weeks in order to enter in all six categories. Many of the patrons spent time researching from books on birds to determine the appropriate colors to use.
