The new adult services coordinator at Cape Girardeau Public Library assumes her position with 17 years of experience in library services.
Betty Martin started her job here Aug. 29. Martin moved to the Cape Girardeau area in June after her marriage to the Rev. Mark Martin, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church at Egypt Mills.
She previously worked two years with the St. Louis Public Library, specializing in youth services. For 15 years before that, she handled youth services for the public library in Wallingford, Conn.
"Wallingford is very similar to the size of Cape Girardeau," Martin said. "I feel very comfortable being here."
Martin has a master's degree in library science from Southern Connecticut State University at New Haven.
One of her immediate goals is to coordinate some adult programs. Martin said she would like to arrange a monthly program on a topic that would prove interesting to most adults. She would consider a series of programs if the subject matter and interest warranted more than one session.
"We could do some things on parenting, possibly some crafts and some self-help programs," Martin said. She is considering a survey to find the interests of those in the community.
Martin will continue to develop the collection of adult non-fiction and fiction that the library has to offer. She said she is open to suggestions from patrons on what they would like to see at the library.
