CAPE GIRARDEAU -- New officers were elected recently for the Friends of the Cape Girardeau Public Library.
New officers are Alice Irvine, president; Marilyn Ritter, vice-president; Phyllis Jackson, secretary; Sally Owen, treasurer.
Library director Terry Risko said, "The friends are an extension of the library board; promoting public relations in the community, supporting library activities, volunteering when needed.
"In essence, what we need, is a vibrant group to be the backbone of the library."
The friends recently donated $1.500 for the library's summer reading program. The money will be used to purchase books for children completing the reading program.
Plans were made for the annual book sale to be held June 1 at the library. The organization is asking for donations of books from the community which can be dropped off at the library.
Proceeds from the book sale will be used for "enhancement projects" such as a new outdoor book return, starting a compact disc collection and Children's Summer Reading Program.
