Fines for overdue books at the Cape Girardeau Public Library may be paid off with canned foods instead of cash this month.

The food items collected by the library will be given to FISH, a local food bank, which provides food to needy families.

"Basically this is the time of year that people do want to give, and there are a lot of people in our community who do need food," said Bettye Black, at the library. "We thought this was a good way for the library to get involved.

"We're trying to approximate 50 cents per can toward the fines," Black said.

She said the library on average collects about $1,000 in fines during a month.
