Before your calendar fills up with activities, be sure to add one very important date: giving blood at the Leopold Ladies Sodality blood drive on Feb. 11. Area blood supplies remain low. By donating now, you can make sure blood is constantly available for hospital patients.

As a healthy, frequent Red Cross blood donor, you can help assure a safe and adequate blood supply. You can start by donating blood at the Leopold Ladies Sodality blood drive from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Sunday, Feb. 11 at Leopold Elementary School.

All blood types are needed, but type O is particularly needed. Type O is the most common blood type and is used in 52 percent of all surgeries. Since only 46 percent of the population have type O blood, type O donors are asked to give blood more frequently. If you don't know your blood type, you can find out by donating blood. After the drive, Red Cross will send you a card with your blood type listed. This card will list the number of times you have given blood in the past and will expedite future blood donations.
