In a news release, museum officials cited three reasons for the decision -- the struggling economy; a lack of anticipated state funding; and a recent report that the first-year attendance failed to meet projections at Springfield's outdoor-themed Wonders of Wildlife museum.

First announced last fall, the museum was envisioned as a $120 million attraction filled with antique airplanes, state-of-the-art flight simulators and a full-motion theater.
