The Jackson Chamber of Commerce and Jackson Industrial Development Co. held its annual installation and industrial appreciation banquet Monday at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
Desmond Lee, co-founder of LeeRowan, was the guest speaker. Lee, a well-known and committed philanthropist with special interests in increasing opportunities for disadvantaged people, made it clear that his beginnings in Jackson at LeeRowan were the major source of his gifts.
As he spoke about the history behind his success, he painted a picture of modesty, with reference to his wire-bending humble beginnings.
The advice he imparted goes as follows: Continue to be progressive and visionary, be inclusive and diverse, invite all to participate, keep up with rapidly changing technology, maintain the beauty, charm and culture of Jackson.
In addition, Lee made a $15,000 donation to be used for Future Business Leaders of America scholarships, payable at $5,000 a year, over a three-year period.
The Rev. Walter Keisker made a speech about Lee, validating the fact that Lee's relationships with employees and his caring attitude toward others are what made Lee a success.
Jackson alderwoman Val Tuschhoff introduced the new chamber officers, and mayor Paul Sander installed the officers and presented awards.
