The next meeting of the Richard J. Oglesby-Birds Point, Mo. Camp No. 61 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War has been scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Port Cape Girardeau restaurant.
In addition to regular business, there will be a discussion of Civil War uniforms and equipment of Union infantrymen.
Formed in May 1996, the Richard J. Oglesby-Birds Point, Mo. Camp 61 consists of members from across Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri.
The Sons of Union Veterans is dedicated to keeping alive the memory of the Union veterans of the Civil War through educational and patriotic displays. Dating back to 1881, the Sons of Union Veterans was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1954 and serves as the legal heir to the Grand Army of the Republic, a post-Civil War veterans organization.
