Adult education program opens on Kingshighway

The Adult/Literacy Program (GED) has reopened on 760 S. Kingshighway for the school year.

Classes are free and meet from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday. For more information, call 334-0900, extension 17.

Honor society to raise money for books

Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society will hold a fund-raising garage sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at 636 Highland Drive in Cape Girardeau.

Proceeds from the garage sale will be used to purchase Little Golden Books to be donated to local hospitals for newborn babies as part of the "Born to Read" literacy project.

Deadline for academy applications Sept. 30

U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan has announced that those interested in her nomination to the U.S. military academies must complete and return all application packets by Sunday, Sept. 30, in order to be considered.

Carnahan nominates 10 Missourians for each opening she has in each academy, with the final selections coming from the academies themselves. Students may apply for nominations to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs and the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point.

Carnahan will evaluate applicants on ACT or SAT scores, high school grade-point average, leadership abilities and physical aptitude. Interested individuals should write a brief letter requesting an application packet to Jason Ramsey in Carnahan's Jefferson City office at 122 East High, Second Floor, Jefferson City, Mo. 65101.

Back-to-school night at alternative center

Parents of students attending the Alternative Education Center are invited to attend the Back to School Night Thursday, Sept. 20, from 6-7:30 p.m. at 1000 S. Ranney.

A brief welcome will be held and parents will be able to tour the school and meet with their student's teachers.

Preschool to have story hour next week

"Book Care" will be the theme of the Scott County Preschool Story Hour Wednesday, Sept. 19.

Preschool Story Hour is for students ages 3-5 years and is Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Kelly Elementary library.

The theme of the Oct. 3 story hour is fire prevention.

Wade graduates with management degree

Mark A. Wade recently graduated from the University of Phoenix Online with a master's degree in management science, computer information systems.

He is the son of the late Ralph R. Wade of Jackson, Mo., and Lillie R. Swan Wade of Oak Ridge, Mo.

Wade is a graduate of Assumption High School in East St. Louis, Ill., received an associate degree in data processing from State Community College in East St. Louis and also received a bachelor's degree in computing information science from McKendree College in Lebanon, Ill.

He currently works for the National Geographic Survey in Rolla, Mo., and plans to pursue a Ph.D.
