Local teens selected as scholarship finalists; scholarships; VFW scholarship competition set

Bertrand gets doctorate of pharmacy degree

Mary Kathryn "Katie" (Barbour) Bertrand received a doctorate of pharmacy degree from the University of Mississippi school of pharmacy in Oxford, Miss. She also received the Facts and Comparisons excellence in clinical communication award and is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Richard J. Swartz of Cape Girardeau and Mr. and Mrs. R. Kevin Barbour of Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Local teens selected as scholarship finalists

Jessie Lynn Ritter, daughter of Dr. Karlyle Christian-Ritter of Cape Girardeau, was selected as a finalist in the Pre-Teen Missouri Scholarship and Recognition Program, which will be held in September in Jefferson City, Mo.

Rachel Sprandel, daughter of Scott and Debby Sprandel of Jackson, was named a merit finalist at the Miss Teen of Missouri Scholarship and Recognition Pageant in Columbia.

  • William Beggs, son of Diana and Bill Beggs of Kelso, Mo., recently received an entrepreneurial scholarship to study at Washington University in St. Louis.

* Kathy Michel of Cape Girardeau has received a scholarship from the 14th District American Legion Auxiliary to attend nursing school at Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis. She currently is employed at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau and is a student at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center.

VFW scholarship competition set

Area high school students can compete in this year's Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary "Voice of Democracy' scholarship competition by recording a three-to-five-minute audio essay expressing their views on the patriotic theme of "how I demonstrate my freedom." Local entries must be submitted to VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau by Nov. 1. For more information, contact the VFW at 335-3066.
