- Kyle Gray, son of Judith Gray, received an award at the 2007 Student Awards Convocation on April 26 at the College of the Ozarks. Gray is a 2005 graduate of Kelly High School. Awards are given based on outstanding accomplishments in the areas of academics, work and character.
- Immaculate Conception School eighth-grader Josh Sellers placed fourth individually at the recent Notre Dame High School Jr. High Scholar Bowl conducted April 12. Representing Immaculate Conception School of Jackson were Josh Sellers, Allison Baugh, Madison Blankenship, Duston Hutson, Chris Dunning, Coleman Schott, Katie Bradshaw, Adam Montgomery and Erin Bollman. The IC Scholar Bowl coach was teacher Ms. Michelle Ha, assisted by parent Jackie Hutson and Notre Dame student/IC alumnus, Katie Lakener.
- Three Southeast Missouri State University students have been chosen to attend the 21st Century Leadership Academy, a weeklong residential program held on the campus of UM-St. Louis May 20 through 25. Shelly Wood is a junior majoring in Social Work and Spanish at Southeast Missouri State University. She is a member of the Spanish Club, the student chapter of Missouri Association for Social Welfare, and Phi Alpha. The Cape Girardeau native is participating in the McNair Scholars program, designed to prepare students for graduate studies. Victoria Boren is a junior majoring in psychology/gerontology/religion at Southeast Missouri State University. Boren has been active visiting nursing homes and veterans homes. She is a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Alzheimer's Association and has held office in four organizations on campus. While working two jobs she maintains a 3.862 GPA. Jessi N. Glueck is a junior majoring in english/literature and creative writing at Southeast Missouri State University. She is a newly inducted member of the SEMO chapter of the honor society for english majors, Sigma Tau Delta. She is also the vice-president and fund-raising chairwoman for the SEMO Model United Nations organization.

- Cindy Gordinier-Harkey with Southeast Missouri State University is among six professional educators who recently were the first to complete training at the Reading Recovery University Training Center established in the University's College of Education last September. Gordinier-Harkey, who will be based on campus, will serve as the Reading Recovery Teacher Leader for several local school districts, including Advance, Bell City, Bernie, Chaffee, Cape Girardeau, Meadow Heights, Oak RidgeI, Jackson, Perry County, Puxico and Scott County. Gordinier-Herkey also received the John L. and Patricia Krieger Stehr Scholarship, which is awarded to graduate students in the department of elementary, early and special education who are studying early literacy.
- Cape Girardeau Sam's Club announced its Teacher of the Year. The Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year program is in its 12th year and has recognized more than 26,000 teachers nationwide. Each year every Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Neightborhood Market, warehouse, and distribution center takes nominations from the community for Teacher of the Year for local school districts. One teacher is selected from the nominations. Cape Girardeau Sam's Club recently honored its Teacher of the Year, Lynne Karnes from St. Vincent de Paul Elementary School in Cape Girardeau. Sam's presented the school with a $1,000 check to be used in a manner chosen by Karnes and principle Kay Glastetter. In addition, Karnes received a Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year polo shirt, Teacher of the Year certificate, $100 gift card for classroom supplies and an invitation to apply for Wal-Mart Missouri Teacher of the Year, where the winner is awarded $10,000 and goes on to a national level. Karnes' photo will be posted in the local Sam's Club, honoring her for the next year.
- This month, Pam Dumey will depart for Tokyo as a participant in the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund (JFMF) Teacher Program. Dumey, from Cape Girardeau Middle School, was selected from a national pool of over 1,700 applicants by a panel of educators for the trip. The program allows distinguished primary and secondary school educators in the United States to travel to Japan for three weeks to promote greater intercultural understanding between the two nations. Dumey will be among 200 educators visiting Japan this month.
Three students at Jackson High School have been selected to attend the 2007 Missouri Scholars Academy, a three-week residential program for a total of 330 students to be held June 10 through 30 on the campus of the Univer sity of Missouri-Columbia. The students are Casi Aslin, daughter of Richard and Judy Aslin, Gabriel Eggers, son of Richard and Marica Eggers, and Drew Young, son of Jeff and April Seyer. The Missouri Scholars Academy will celebrate its twenty-third year. The goals of the Academy are to help gifted students achieve their full potential and motivate them to use their abilities to attain high standards of achievement, to encourage local schools to improve and expand gifted education programs, and to assist in providing the state with experienced faculty and specialized curriculum for such students.
American Legion Post 158 selects 2006-2007 Jackson High School Music Students of the Month
American Legion Post 158 of Jackson has selected Jackson High School Music Students for the school year of 2006-2007. This program is part of the Americanism Committee of the American Legion. It recognizes outstanding music students at Jackson High School. Each selected student receives a $100 Savings Bond to honor their accomplishments.
