  • Ryan Bandermann of Cape Girardeau graduated summa cum laude from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a master's degree in physical therapy.
  • Carey Hale graduated summa cum laude from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. In September, Hale will enter the Master of Arts in International Affairs program at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs Fellowship. Hale is the daughter of Danny Hale of Jackson and Dana Davis of Commerce City, Colo.
  • Amanda Dumey of Cape Girardeau graduated summa cum laude from Missouri State University with a bachelor's degree and was a participant of the Honors College.
  • Bethany Hicks of Cape Girardeau graduated from Missouri State University with a bachelor's degree.
  • Richard Feiner III of Jackson graduated from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science degree.
  • Kathryn Kruse of Jackson graduated summa cum laude from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in nursing and was a participant of the Honors College.

  • Jeremy Lynn of Kelly High School is the recipient of the MFA Foundation Scholarship, Scott County Farm Bureau Scholarship, Scott County Women in Agriculture and the Murray State University Mabel Garrett Pulliam Scholarship. He is the son of Gary and Cynthia Lynn. He plans to attend Murray State University majoring in ag communications.
  • Keith Brennecke of Cape Girardeau has been admitted to Concordia University, St. Paul, Minn., for the 2007 fall semester. Brennecke was awarded the Concordia Opportunity Grant.
  • Danny Wittenborn, a 1997 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School and the son of Brad and Michele Wittenborn of Cape Girardeau, has been selected to receive the Bilsland Dissertation Fellowship at Purdue University. The Bilsland Fellowship is awarded to an outstanding Ph.D. candidate in Purdue's College of Technology.

SCHOLARSHIPS

  • Truman State University student Sarah Huber of Jackson has been awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the Truman State University Foundation for summer 2007. Huber, a sophomore english pre-MAE major, received the Foundation Study Abroad scholarship. She is the daughter of Nick and Patty Huber and attended Notre Dame High School. At Truman, Huber is involved in the service sorority Alpha Sigma Gamma, NSCS and the Newman Center.
  • Ryan Pohlman of Oak Ridge, Mo., is the recipient of the 2007 Southeast Missouri District Fair Foundation Scholarship. The $600 scholarship is awarded annually to a college student with an agriculture-related major and past participation in the SEMO District Fair. Pohlman is the son of Terry and Bonnie Pohlman of Oak Ridge.
  • Zachary Nolan of Jackson has been awarded a Regents Scholarship and Boys State Leadership Award to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Nolan is a 2007 graduate of Jackson High School. While at Southeast, Nolan plans to major in elementary education. He is the son of Greg and Karen Nolan.
  • Stephen Thurman of Jackson has been awarded a Regents Scholarship, Missouri Assessment Program Scholarship and Boys State Leadership Award to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Thurman is a 2007 graduate of Jackson High School. He is the son of Mike and Sherry Yaeger of Jackson and Steve and Tammy Thurman of Dexter, Mo. While at Southeast, Thurman plans to major in business.
  • Lindsey Greene of Cape Girardeau has been awarded a Regents Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Greene is a 2007 graduate of Central High School. She is the daughter of Dan and Tempa Greene.
  • Melody Stone of Cape Girardeau has been awarded a Regents Scholarship and a Missouri Assessment Program Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Stone is a 2007 graduate of Central High School. She is the daughter of Barry and Elaine Stone. While at Southeast, Stone plans to major in music.
  • Megan Chapman of Oran, Mo., has been awarded a Regents Scholarship and a Missouri Assessment Program Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Chapman is a 2007 graduate of Oran High School. She is the daughter of Keith and Lori Chapman. While at Southeast, Chapman plans to major in mass communication.
  • Tracy Kiser of Cape Gir­ar­deau has been awarded a Regents Scholarship and a Missouri Assessment Program Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Kiser is a 2007 graduate of Central High School. She is the daughter of Thomas Kiser of Cape Girardeau and Mary Beckett, also of Cape Girardeau. While at Southeast, Kiser plans to major in biology with an option in biomedical sciences.
  • Trae Smith of Jackson has been awarded a President's Scholarship, a Missouri Leadership Award, and a Missouri Assessment Program Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Smith is a 2007 graduate of Jackson High School. He is the son of Bradley and Brenda Smith.
  • Dallas Tew of Scott City has been awarded a President's Scholarship, a Missouri Leadership Award, and a Missouri Assessment Program Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Tew is a 2007 graduate of Thomas W. Kelly High School. He is the son of Dennis and City Tew. While at Southeast, Tew plans to major in engineering technology.
  • Emily Strobel of Sikeston, Mo., has been awarded a President's Scholarship and a Missouri Assessment Program Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Strobel is a 2007 graduate of Thomas W. Kelly High School in Benton, Mo. She is the daughter of Shane and Carol Strobel of Sikeston and Debbie Deal Strobel, also of Sikeston. While at Southeast, Strobel plans to major in business.
  • David Gholson of Jackson has been awarded a President's Scholarship and a Missouri Leadership Award to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Gholson is a 2007 graduate of Jackson High School. He is the son of Gary and Barbara Gholson. While at Southeast, Gholson plans on majoring in agribusiness with an option in animal science.
  • Clayton Scherer of Oran, Mo., has been awarded a Community College Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University beginning in the 2007-2008 academic year. Scherer graduated from Oran High School and Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Mo. He is the son of Danny and Marlene Scherer. While at Southeast, Scherer plans to major in biology.
  • The Mary Maud and Norvell Hosea Memorial Scholarships for the 2007-2008 school year have been awarded to Delta High School graduate A.J. Horn, son of Tom and Diane Horn of Whitewater. The Former Graduate Scholarship has been awarded to Amon Roger Seabaugh, son of Roger and LaWanna Seabaugh of Leopold, Mo. The scholarship was presented by the Whitewater Masonic Lodge 417 and Whitewater Order of the Eastern Star 174. Horn will be attending Southeast Missouri State University and Seabaugh is a student at Southeast Missouri State University.
  • High school senior Karen Obermann of Notre Dame Regional High School has been selected an "honorable mention" student in the 2007 Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of Missouri's top academic students in the graduating class of 2007.

  • Kyle Gray, son of Judith Gray, received an award at the 2007 Student Awards Convocation on April 26 at the College of the Ozarks. Gray is a 2005 graduate of Kelly High School. Awards are given based on outstanding accomplishments in the areas of academics, work and character.
  • Immaculate Conception School eighth-grader Josh Sellers placed fourth individually at the recent Notre Dame High School Jr. High Scholar Bowl conducted April 12. Representing Immaculate Conception School of Jackson were Josh Sellers, Allison Baugh, Madison Blankenship, Duston Hutson, Chris Dunning, Coleman Schott, Katie Bradshaw, Adam Montgomery and Erin Bollman. The IC Scholar Bowl coach was teacher Ms. Michelle Ha, assisted by parent Jackie Hutson and Notre Dame student/IC alumnus, Katie Lakener.
  • Three Southeast Missouri State University students have been chosen to attend the 21st Century Leadership Academy, a weeklong residential program held on the campus of UM-St. Louis May 20 through 25. Shelly Wood is a junior majoring in Social Work and Spanish at Southeast Missouri State University. She is a member of the Spanish Club, the student chapter of Missouri Association for Social Welfare, and Phi Alpha. The Cape Girardeau native is participating in the McNair Scholars program, designed to prepare students for graduate studies. Victoria Boren is a junior majoring in psychology/gerontology/religion at Southeast Missouri State University. Boren has been active visiting nursing homes and veterans homes. She is a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Alzheimer's Association and has held office in four organizations on campus. While working two jobs she maintains a 3.862 GPA. Jessi N. Glueck is a junior majoring in english/literature and creative writing at Southeast Missouri State University. She is a newly inducted member of the SEMO chapter of the honor society for english majors, Sigma Tau Delta. She is also the vice-president and fund-raising chairwoman for the SEMO Model United Nations organization.

Extra Credit

  • Cindy Gordinier-Harkey with Southeast Missouri State University is among six professional educators who recently were the first to complete training at the Reading Recovery University Training Center established in the University's College of Education last September. Gordinier-Harkey, who will be based on campus, will serve as the Reading Recovery Teacher Leader for several local school districts, including Advance, Bell City, Bernie, Chaffee, Cape Girardeau, Meadow Heights, Oak RidgeI, Jackson, Perry County, Puxico and Scott County. Gordinier-Herkey also received the John L. and Patricia Krieger Stehr Scholarship, which is awarded to graduate students in the department of elementary, early and special education who are studying early literacy.
  • Cape Girardeau Sam's Club announced its Teacher of the Year. The Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year program is in its 12th year and has recognized more than 26,000 teachers nationwide. Each year every Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Neightborhood Market, warehouse, and distribution center takes nominations from the community for Teacher of the Year for local school districts. One teacher is selected from the nominations. Cape Girardeau Sam's Club recently honored its Teacher of the Year, Lynne Karnes from St. Vincent de Paul Elementary School in Cape Girardeau. Sam's presented the school with a $1,000 check to be used in a manner chosen by Karnes and principle Kay Glastetter. In addition, Karnes received a Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year polo shirt, Teacher of the Year certificate, $100 gift card for classroom supplies and an invitation to apply for Wal-Mart Missouri Teacher of the Year, where the winner is awarded $10,000 and goes on to a national level. Karnes' photo will be posted in the local Sam's Club, honoring her for the next year.
  • This month, Pam Dumey will depart for Tokyo as a participant in the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund (JFMF) Teacher Program. Dumey, from Cape Girardeau Middle School, was selected from a national pool of over 1,700 applicants by a panel of educators for the trip. The program allows distinguished primary and secondary school educators in the United States to travel to Japan for three weeks to promote greater intercultural understanding between the two nations. Dumey will be among 200 educators visiting Japan this month.

Three students at Jackson High School have been selected to attend the 2007 Missouri Scholars Academy, a three-week residential program for a total of 330 students to be held June 10 through 30 on the campus of the Univer sity of Missouri-Columbia. The students are Casi Aslin, daughter of Richard and Judy Aslin, Gabriel Eggers, son of Richard and Marica Eggers, and Drew Young, son of Jeff and April Seyer. The Missouri Scholars Academy will celebrate its twenty-third year. The goals of the Academy are to help gifted students achieve their full potential and motivate them to use their abilities to attain high standards of achievement, to encourage local schools to improve and expand gifted education programs, and to assist in providing the state with experienced faculty and specialized curriculum for such students.

American Legion Post 158 selects 2006-2007 Jackson High School Music Students of the Month

American Legion Post 158 of Jackson has selected Jackson High School Music Students for the school year of 2006-2007. This program is part of the Americanism Committee of the American Legion. It recognizes outstanding music students at Jackson High School. Each selected student receives a $100 Savings Bond to honor their accomplishments.
