Lindenwood University to offer $7,000 scholarship
Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., has implemented a $3 million program to encourage young people in rural areas to enter the teaching profession.
Under the plan, the university will provide an annual scholarship in the amount of $7,000, plus a work study benefit of $1,800 for eligible full-time resident students from small, rural high schools.
An eligible student must be a good school citizen who meets at least two of the following criteria: top 20 percent of his/her graduating class; ACT score of 25 or higher and GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Jackson High graduate receives scholarship
Jordan Hinkle, a 2003 graduate of Jackson High School, was the recipient of a scholarship from Regional Eyecare Center Inc.
Hinkle is pursuing a four-year degree in a health-related field.

Johnson gets psychology degree from KSU
Monaca Johnson of Cape Girardeau received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Kentucky State University during spring commencement ceremonies.
She is the daughter of Kenny and Teresa Campbell of Cape Girardeau.
Essner gets Best Buy Foundation scholarship
Best Buy Children's Foundation has awarded a scholarship to Joshua Essner, a 2003 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School.
He is the son of Tom and Becki Essner and plans to attend Purdue University.
Scienski awarded P&G Fund scholarship
Michal Scienski, a 2003 graduate of Jackson High School, has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the P&G Fund Scholarship Competition.
The program awarded 146 scholarships to students this year who are children of P&G employees.
Local student graduates with honors from SMSU
Bryan Drury, a 1998 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School, graduated cum laude May 16 from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo.
He received a bachelor's degree in marketing/ management and is completing an internship with the Marlin Company, an advertising agency in Springfield.
Drury is the son of Jerry and Kathleen Drury of Cape Girardeau.
Jackson students help clean up creek
Jackson Alternative School students recently participated in the Missouri Conservation Commission's Stream Team project. For the project, debris is removed from Hubble Creek, located near the school. Co-directors Gerald Lintner and Jerry McElrath planned the event and Everett Cassady and John Patrick supervised.
Redfearn, Bragg receive Sam Walton scholarships
Ashleigh Redfearn and Nathan Bragg of Cape Girardeau have received $1,000 Sam Walton Community Scholarships.
Both are graduates of Central High School. Redfearn plans to attend Brigham Young University, and Bragg plans to attend Boston University.
Houston, Spence receive degrees from SIU
Janice Houston and Karen Spence of Cape Girardeau and Amanda Cochran of Sikeston, Mo., were among 3,768 students to receive degrees during the spring commencement ceremonies at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.
Houston received a bachelor's degree in social work, Spence received a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene and Cochran received a degree in law.
Local student graduates from medical school
Catherine Meschler recently graduated from St. Louis University Medical School.
She is a 1995 graduate of Central High School and the daughter of Eric and Jean Gooden of Cape Girardeau. Meschler and husband Dr. Justin Meschler plan to begin residencies in Baltimore, Md., in June at Johns Hopkins University.
Sirimaturos elected student body president
Michael Sirimaturos, a 2000 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School, has been elected student body president at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy for the 2003-04 school year.
He is the son of Chris Sirimaturos of Cape Girardeau.
Jackson student earns spot on CMSU dean's list
Lisa Millham of Jackson was among students on the Central Missouri State University dean's list for spring semester 2003.
Millham received a 4.0 grade point average during that semester.
Area students graduate from William Woods
Eight local residents graduated recently from William Woods University in Fulton, Mo.
Tara Zeller and Heather Fisher of Jackson, Tammy Brock and Sheryl Robertson Smith of Cape Girardeau, Mark Gihring of Altenburg, Mo., Vera Hennemann of Benton, Mo., and Shelly Bohn of Scott City, all received a master's degree in education.
Michael Minner Jr. of Cape Girardeau received a bachelor's degree.
Stubbs graduates summa cum laude
Kristen Nicole Stubbs graduated summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn., with a degree in computer science.
She is the daughter of James Jr. and Jean Stubbs of Lee's Summitt, Mo., and the granddaughter of Harvey and Ruth Nischwitz of rural Gordonville, and James and Marlene Stubbs of Chaffee.
Central student to attend Boys State at CMSU
Pierce Yates, a student at Central High School, has been selected to attend the upcoming American Legion Boys State of Missouri at Central Missouri State University.
He is sponsored by Cape West Rotary and is involved in student senate, debate team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and athletics. He is a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and is the son of Ted and Margaret Yates.

Local residents were among 3,295 students at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., named to the spring 2003 semester dean's list.

Honor society accepts Scott City student
Bonnie Essner of Scott City has been accepted into the Golden Key International Honor Society at Loyola University in Chicago.
The society is a nonprofit academic honors organization that provides recognition, leadership opportunities, community service, career networking and scholarships.
Ketcher graduates from Louisville dentistry school
Reid J. Ketcher recently graduated from Louisville School of Dentistry in Louisville, Ky.
He is a graduate of Central High School and Southeast Missouri State University, and is the son of David and Noretta Blattner of Jackson, Mo., and Jim Ketcher of Cape Girardeau.
SEMO alumna earns veterinary degree
Monica Keith, daughter of Roy and Mollie Keith of Alto Pass, Ill., recently graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine with a doctor of veterinary medicine degree.
She is a 1991 graduate of Cobden High School and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a master's degree in biology in 1998.
Local student named collegiate scholar
Frank McGinty Jr. of Cape Girardeau was named an All-American Collegiate Scholar.
He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Frank McGinty, and the grandson of Dr. and Mrs. Charles McGinty and Polly Grafner, all of Cape Girardeau.
