Jessica Klipfel of Cape Girardeau has been named a U.S. national award winner in English. Klipfel is a student at Notre Dame Regional High School. She is the daughter of Mike and Therese Klipfel.

Three area students take part in honor choir

Local students recently participated in the Southwest American Choral Directors Association honor choir in Little Rock, Ark. Fifth-grade soprano Jessie Ritter and sixth-grade alto Diane Strong represented Nell Holcomb School District. Seventh-grade soprano Sami Gross represented Central Junior High School. Students from a seven-state region were selected for the choir based on videotaped auditions.

Two local students win awards for achievement

Jenny Huo of Cape Girardeau was recently named a U.S. national honor roll award winner by the U.S. Achievement Academy. Huo, a student at Central Junior High School, is the daughter of Minzou and Haihua Huo of Cape Girardeau. Laura Friese of Oak Ridge was named a national award winner in business education by the U.S. Achievement Academy. Friese, a student at Oak Ridge High School, is the daughter of Cathy Sue Friese of Oak Ridge.

FCCLA members win conference competitions

Members of Jackson High School's FCCLA recently participated in a state leadership conference in Columbia, Mo. Top local winners in the conference competitions were:

Squires receives doctorate in education

Gwendolyn Squires recently received her doctorate in education administration. Squires is a 1975 graduate of Central High School, a 1981 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University and a graduate of Kansas State University, University of Missouri-Kansas City and Heart of America College. She is the daughter of Mary F. Squires of Cape Girardeau and is employed with the Kansas City, Mo., School District as an elementary principal.

Two area students win $500 scholarships

Two area students have been named as recipients of the Missouri Association of Mutual Insurance Companies' $500 scholarships. Gordonville Mutual Insurance Company announced that Jennifer K. Schlick of Jackson High School and Matthew Henderson of Delta High School are two of 16 Missouri students to win the award.
