Area students take part in state music contest

Several students from the Cape Girardeau School District recently attended the Missouri State Music Contest. Students from school districts all over the state were eligble to participate after receiving a "superior" rating at a district-level competition. Cape Girardeau students who performed in either vocal solos and ensembles or instrumental solos and ensembles were: Megan Wright, Jonathan Bernhardt, David Berry, Cheryl Hagler, Joe Moore, Shawn Seabaugh, Joseph Vannostrand, Alex Bettinger, Drew Kiel, Cara McElmurry, Renee Moreland, Emily Viers, Bekah Pfanstiel, Allyson Herbst, Jessica Cook, Tarn Heid, Julie Hite, Kat Renfrow, Elizabeth Schanbacher, Erin Herbst, Monica Jordan, Amber Lusk, Stephanie Schaffner, Jarred Harris, Rachel Hendricks, Sam Maguire, Jesse Pyeatte, Catherine Hayward and Corey Main.

Meadow Heights names its students of the month

April students of the month from Meadow Heights High School were Sara Stevens, Joel Hahs, Hannah Fulbright, Brad Adams, Zachary Bynrum and Carrie Warden.

Arteme receives graduate scholarship to SLU

Amy Arteme is the recipient of a 2004 St. Louis Dietetic Association graduate scholarship. Arteme is enrolled in a dietetic internship program at St. Louis University and has been inducted into the Alpha Eta national honor society. She is a graduate of Kelly High School and Southeast Missouri State University. She is the daughter of Jim and Margaret Arteme of Benton, Mo.

Jackson native to intern in Washington, D.C.

Southeast Missouri State University senior Gretchen King of Jackson is interning this semester for an international intelligence company in Washington, D.C. King is the daughter of Benny and Nancy King of Jackson. She is an international business student at Southeast and is the first student in that program to intern in the nation's capital.

Harris to intern with Emerson over summer

Erick D. Harris, a junior at Vanderbilt University, has been accepted for an internship with U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson this summer. Harris, a 2002 graduate of Central High School, is a member of the university honor council, Black Republicans and secretary of his fraternity. He is majoring in political science. Harris is the son of James and Essie Harris of Cape Girardeau.

Meadow Heights junior will attend Upward Bound

Chris J. Isreal has been selected to attend the Upward Bound summer math and science program at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. Isreal is a junior at Meadow Heights High School and is one of 60 students from Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas chosen for the six-week program this summer. He is the son of James and Glenda Isreal of Sedgewickville, Mo.

Two area students earn spot in Who's Who

Talitha Hoffstetter of Gordonville and Andrew Obermann of Chaffee, Mo., were recently nominated for the 2003-2004 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Both are students at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo.

Area students named to Washington dean's list

Amanda E. Alexander of Cape Girardeau and Joseph Walter and Natalie Ray of Jackson have been named to the fall 2003 semester dean's list at Washington University in St. Louis. Alexander is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Allan Gocio of Cape Girardeau. She is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. Walter is the son Mr. and Mrs. John Walter of Jackson. He is enrolled in the Olin School of Business and is a graduate of Jackson High School. Ray is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Ray of Jackson and is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. She is a graduate of Troy Buchanan High School in Troy, Mo.

Hooks receives merit scholarship to Baylor

Daniel Hooks of Gordonville is one of four students nationally to receive a merit scholarship to attend Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn. Baylor School, founded in 1893, is an independent, coeducational day and boarding college preparatory school. Hooks is the son of David and Priscilla Hooks of Gordonville. He is currently an eighth-grade student at R.O. Hawkins Junior High in Jackson.
