Student wins flag at Notre Dame career day

Lauren Mehner recently won an American flag during a drawing at Career Day at Notre Dame Regional High School.

The flag was donated by Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel.

Masonic Lodges offer college scholarship

The Masonic Lodges of Alexander, Pulaski and Union counties are offering a scholarship to a senior enrolled in a high school in those counties.

Applicants must be in the top 40 percent of their class and plan to attend an Illinois institution of higher education and have no other scholarship.

Information and applications are available through high school counselors' offices. Deadline is 4 p.m. April 25.

Area kindergarten screenings scheduled

Local schools offering upcoming kindergarten registration and screenings are:

Cape Girardeau School District: Parents as Teachers will hold screenings during the week of April 28-May 2. For an appointment, call 651-3703. Screenings will be held 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 28, 30 and May 2; and from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. April 29 and May 1.

Shawnee Elementary North: Registration from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 25 Parents must bring child's birth certificate, immunization record, insurance card or Medicaid number and Social Security card. Registration by appointment only, call 565-2211.

Two Maryville University students make dean's list

Holly Doza and Gail Heuschober, both of Cape Girardeau, were named to the fall semester dean's list at Maryville University in St. Louis. To be eligible, students must carry at least 12 semester hours and have at least a B-plus average with no single grade below a B.

Scott City high school students receive honors

Scott City High School students Kelly Cook, Katherine Mirgeaux, Loretta Holmes and Rachel Palisch recently received honors.

Cook was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students, the National Society of High School Scholars and nominated for the High School Christian Student Athlete All-American award.

Cook is involved with National Honor Society, Future Teachers of America, Future Business Leaders of America, student council, volleyball, cheerleading, pep club, yearbook staff and science club.

She is the daughter of M.G. and Sandi Cook of Scott City.

Mirgeaux was recently chosen as the Cape Girardeau Elks' student of the month for April.

She is the daughter of Jim and Terry Mirgeaux of Scott City and is involved in National Honor Society, FBLA, art club, Christian Youth Club and 4-H rodeo.

Holmes was chosen as the Elks' student of the month for March. She is the daughter of Larry and Helen Holmes of Scott City and is president of FBLA, editor of the yearbook staff, secretary of science club and is involved in pep club and swim team.

Palisch has received the Kiwanis Club Scholarship for displaying leadership, academics and scholarship.

She is the daughter of Clayton and Susan Palisch of Scott City and is involved in yearbook, FBLA, pep club, FBTA and honor roll.

School district in top 100 list for music programs

The Cape Girardeau School District was one of two districts in Missouri recently named to the Best 100 Communities for Music Education, an annual list that looks at the best music programs in the United States.

The Best 100 list, which has been compiled for the last four years, is based on a nationwide Internet survey of districts in 50 states and is conducted by the American Music Conference in partnership with other music education-oriented groups.

Holzum chosen student ambassador at Mizzou

Garrett Holzum, son of Jeff and Mary Holzum of Cape Girardeau, was recently chosen as a school of health professions student ambassador for the 2003-2004 school year at University of Missouri-Columbia.

As an ambassador, Holzum will receive a $300 scholarship. He will participate in activities such as job fairs, recruitment efforts, seminars, visiting high schools, assisting with alumni actives and phoning prospective students.

Jackson junior wins writing competition

Timothy Miller recently took first place in the 2003 Missouri Writing Achievement Award's 10-12 fiction competition with his entry, "He Felt Death."

Miller is a junior at Jackson High School and the son of Dean Miller of Cape Girardeau and Alan and Janey Foust of Whitewater, Mo.

Business students win at leadership conference

Five students from Metro Business College in Cape Girardeau recently received awards at the 44th annual Missouri Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference in Jefferson City.

The conference featured competitive events, leadership training and workshop sessions.

Steve Rouse was awarded first place in computer applications; Rouse, Kim Watson and Rick Martin were award second place in multimedia presentation; Christy Moore was awarded third place in word processing; Jeff Kinder was awarded fifth place in word processing.

Spence recognized for achievement at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Karen Spence of Cape Girardeau was recently recognized for her academic achievement during an honors day ceremony at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The university recognized 2,352 undergraduate students who attend full time and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Chaffee man to present recital at Quincy University

QUINCY, Ill. -- Matthew Antill, son of Robert and Julie Antill of Chaffee, Mo., will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Quincy University.

Antill recently participated in the university's production of "Godspell."

A member of the university's Choral Scholars for four years, Antill is a five-year member of the chamber choir and symphonic band. He also has participated in drama activities and is active in campus ministry and peer ministry programs.

Oak Ridge staff honored for performance

Oak Ridge Elementary teachers Jennifer Hart, Susan LaPierre and Brandelin Frazier were recently cited for oustanding performance in reading education from Renaissance Learning. All three were award Renaissance's Model Classroom Level I Certification for their efforts to adopt the company's methods and increase student reading performance.

The school will receive merchandise certificates toward the purchase of Renaissance materials and a discount on staff development opportunities.

Also recognized was Oak Ridge Elementary librarian Beverly Hemmann, who was was recently awarded Reading Renaissance Model Library certification for her efforts to support Reading Renaissance teachers.

To receive the award, librarians must document their practices that encourage students to access a variety of books, as well as supporting reading practice and self-directed learning. The school will receive a $50 merchandise certficate for Renaissance products as well as a discount on staff development opportunities.
