Meadow Heights student council honored

The Missouri Association of Student Councils recently awarded the student council at Meadow Heights High School with the gold honor council award. The honor is based on applications and recognizes councils with comprehensive programs that promote student activities and leadership.

Obereck takes second at state skills competition

Chris Obereck of Jackson was awarded second place in the 2004 Skills USA Vocational Industrial Club of America's state competition recently at Linn State Technical College. Obereck is a student at Ranken Technical College. His second-place win was in automated manufacturing.

Ladd attends conservation leadership meeting

Megan Ladd of Cape Girardeau participated in the third Conservation Leadership Corps at a recent Conservation Federation of Missouri meeting. Ladd is a student at Southeast Missouri State University. She is one of 38 students from across the state to attend the meeting.

Brune receives Caldwell scholarship at NCSU

Lance Brune, an honors program student at North Carolina State University, recently received the John T. Caldwell Fellowship, valued at $12,000. He is a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, plays on the soccer team and is attending the university on a physics scholarship. He is the son of Lance and Eileen Brune of Charlotte, N.C., and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brune and Ann Campbell of Cape Girardeau.

McDaniel gets honorable mention in program

Katie McDaniel, daughter of John and Lesley McDaniel, was selected as an honorable mention student in the 2004 Missouri Scholars 100 program. McDaniel is a student at Perryville High School. The program is statewide and recognizes the top academic seniors in Missouri.

Perryville students win at VFW contest

Katie McDaniel and Mary Nations, students at Perryville High School, recently received awards in the VFW Post 4282 Voice of Democracy Contest. McDaniel, daughter of John and Lesley McDaniel, placed first in the local contest. Nations, daughter of Clarence and Thelma Nations, placed second. At the district level contest, McDaniel placed first and Nations placed third. At the state level, McDaniel placed fourth.

Russell takes first place in ABA competition

Erika Knowlan Russell, a graduate of Jackson High School, recently placed first in the American Bar Association National Appellate Advocacy Competition in Washington, D.C. Russell is a student at Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, Fla. She graduated from Jackson High School in 1996, University of Missouri in 2000 and will graduate from Stetson this May. In addition to taking first place out of 32 teams, Russell also received a "Best Advocate Award." She is the daughter of Jack and Bonnie Knowlan.
