Jackson man earns HeartWorks scholarship

Trent Forrester, a freshman sports medicine major at Missouri Baptist University, has been awarded a scholarship from the HeartWorks Foundation in Festus, Mo.

He is the son of Ken and Rebecca Forrester of Jackson. At MBU, he is a member of the men's junior varsity volleyball team.

St. Vincent students win competitions

Hailey Brown, an eighth-grade student at St. Vincent De Paul Grade School, recently won an all-expenses-paid trip to ISEF in Cleveland, Ohio for her science fair project.

She was awarded first place in chemistry and won a Discovery Award, top overall junior physical science project, best experimental study and the American Chemical Award.

She is the daughter of Mike and Becki Brown of Cape Girardeau.

Michelle Ermatinger Salas, a seventh-grade student at St. Vincent, placed third in a recent National History Day competition for her project, "Taking Responsibility for the Rights of Others During World War II."

She is the daughter of James and Angela Ermatinger-Salas of Cape Girardeau.

Theresa Kiblinger recently placed third in the 2003 Work Zone Safety Poster Contest. She is the daughter of Mark and Debbie Kiblinger of Cape Girardeau.

Claire Bira, an eighth-grader at St. Vincent, received honorable mention in the 2003 Southeast Missouri Writing Achievement for her essay entry.

She is the daughter of Patrick and Ann Bira.

Classroom scouting Adventure Day scheduled

Special needs students from Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois enrolled in the classroom scouting program will participate in Adventure Day May 8 at Cape County Park, South.

This year's theme is the "Old Wild West," and events include horse petting, log-roll relay, horseshoes and crafts. Each student will receive a badge for participating.

Schaefer receives scholarship, award

Kristin Schaefer of Scott City recently received the Recognition Scholarship and the Leadership Award from Murray State University.

She is a senior at Scott City High School and the daughter of Donald and Patricia Schaefer. She plans to major in psychology.

Southeast student earns leadership award

Jay Hubert Smith of Smithton, Ill., received the first ever Jack Buck Scholar-Leadership Award from Southeast Missouri State University. The award was presented in St. Louis and is named for the late Cardinals broadcaster. The award covers tuition and general fees for up to 32 credit hours per academic year.

Shawnee honors program scheduled for May 9

The 20th annual Shawnee Community College honors program and reception will be held on May 9 at 6 p.m. at the main campus near Ullin, Ill. The keynote speaker will be Marlene LaGrone, the 2003 Alumnae of the Year. She is a human relations specialist with SBC in San Antonio, Texas and a 1984 Shawnee graduate.

Area students elected to nursing honor society

Julie Valle, Michelle Hulshof, Janae Askew and Kimberly Phillips have been elected to the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Valle and Hulshof are undergraduate students. Askew and Phillips are graduate students.

Scott City student named national award winner

Ashton Phillips, a student at Scott City High School, has been named a U.S. National Award winner by counselor LaDonna Pratt.

She will appear in the U.S. Achievement Academy official yearbook. She is the daughter of Greg and Debbie Phillips of Scott City, and the granddaughter of Laverne Wilheim of Scott City and Ruby Phillips of Cape Girardeau.

Chisom named national collegiate winner

Misty McCormick-Chisom of Chaffee, Mo., has been named a U.S. National Collegiate Winner in English.

She is a graduate student at Southeast Missouri State University.

Notre Dame student wins Missouri cheerleader title

Holly Bauer of Cape Girardeau recently won the "Miss Missouri Cheerleader of America" 2002-2003 title after a two-day competition in St. Peters, Mo.

Bauer is a senior at Notre Dame Regional High School and the daughter of Robert and Teresa Bauer. She has been a varsity cheerleader for four years, serving as captain for two years. She is involved in student council, yearbook and honor roll.

Bauer won a tiara, certificate, plaques and a $1,000 scholarship.

Renka gets fellowship to Yale University

Nora Renka, daughter of Russell and Paula Renka of Cape Girardeau, was recently awarded University Fellowships that will pay full tuition to Yale University, where she will begin a Ph.D. program in the fall 2003 semester.

She is a 1998 graduate of Central High School and a 2002 graduate of the University of Chicago with a major in classics. Renka plans to study history of music at Yale.

Davis named to Savannah College dean's list

Lindsey Marie Davis of Cape Girardeau was named to the dean's list at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., for the winter 2003 semester.

She is a product design major and the daughter of Phil and Patti Davis.

St. Charles principal is state principal of the year

Darlene Jones, daughter of Marlen and Lorene Oehl of Oak Ridge, Mo., was recently chosen from 500 nominees as the 2003 Missouri High School Principal of the Year by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals.

Jones is the principal of Francis Howell North High School in St. Charles, Mo.

Phi Beta Kappa inducts Truman State students

Sara Little of Cape Girardeau and Cabell Gathman of Pocahontas, Mo., both students sat Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., were recently inducted into the Delta of Missouri Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Little is a psychology major and the daughter of Jim and Melba Little of Cape Girardeau.

Gathman is a senior philosophy and religion major, and the son of Allen and Robin Gathman of Pocahontas.

Sikeston student's art published in 'Highlights'

A drawing by James "Lucas" Houchin, a second-grade student at St. Francis Xavier School in Sikeston, Mo., was chosen for publication in the May 2003 issue of national magazine Highlights for Children.

Houchin is the son of Teresa Houchin. His drawing was titled "The Win," and depicted a football player.

Riddick earns Horatio Alger scholarship

Amber Riddick, a student at Delta High School, was among 100 seniors from across the state to receive $2,500 scholarships as Horatio Alger Missouri Scholars.

Students chosen demonstrated success in academics, co-curricular activities and community service while taking on some of life's most difficult challenges.

St. Vincent to hold public showcase today

St. Vincent de Paul Grade School Home and School Association of Cape Girardeau will hold a showcase at 6 p.m. today.

Larmie accepted to Drake; earns scholarship

Clayton R. Larmie of Altoona, Iowa, has been accepted into the pharmacy program and awarded a $35,000 presidental scholarship at Drake University for the fall 2003 semester.

He is the son of Ronnie and Cathie Larmie, formerly of Cape Girardeau, and the grandson of Mayme and Tex Larmie and Ann Campbell, all of Cape Girardeau.

Diebold receives award from pharmacy college

Jennifer Diebold of Cape Girardeau received the Eckerd Drug Scholars Award at St. Louis College of Pharmacy's recent scholarship and awards program.

She is the daughter of Rick and Sarah Ross and a 2001 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School.

Scheper awarded medical technology scholarship

The American Society for Clinical Pathology recently awarded Raegan D. Scheper of Jackson a $1,000 scholarship to become a medical technologist.

She is a student at Southeast Missouri Hospital -- School of Medical Technology.

Notre Dame student wins national award

David Unterreiner, a student at Notre Dame Regional High School, was recently named a U.S. National Award Winner in English.

He will appear in the U.S. Achievement Academy Official Yearbook. Unterreiner is the son of Steve and Debra Unterreiner of Cape Girardeau, and the grandson of Bertha Unterreiner of Cape Girardeau and F.C. and Janes Hennis of Bloomsdale, Mo.
