Sheltons establish music scholarship

The John and Ann Shelton Music Education Scholarship has been established through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation. The scholarship will be awarded to a music major. The scholarship, which is renewable, will be awarded when the fund is fully endowed. John Shelton taught in the music department at Southeast for 36 years, from 1962 to 1998. He also started the Choral Union ensemble. His wife, Ann, was a public school teacher in Kentucky and Tennessee, She taught private piano for many years and also taught for the Southeast Missouri Music Academy.

Aufdenberg receives Regents' Scholarship

Kyle Aufdenberg of Jackson has been awarded a Regents' Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2005-2006 academic year. A senior at Jackson High School, he is the son of David and Carla Aufdenberg of Jackson.

Kelly senior named All-American Scholar

Patrick Shelton of Blodgett, Mo., has been named an All-American Scholar. Shelton, a senior at Kelly High School, will appear in the All-American Scholar Yearbook as part of the award. He is the son of James and Denise Shelton.

Schloss named to Sigma Pi Kappa society

Brenda Schloss of Cape Girardeau, senior planning technician with the city of Cape Girardeau, has been named an honorary member of Southeast Missouri State University's chapter of Sigma Pi Kappa, the international honor society for historic preservation students, faculty and distinguished individuals. Schloss received the honor at the Historic Preservation Commission meeting at city hall on April 20. She has served as city liaison to the commission and helped create a historic preservation master plan for the community.

Students awarded SEMO President's scholarships

Jodi Hodge and Matthew Sanders, both of Chaffee, and Alexander Skelton of Jackson have received President's scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2005-2006 academic year. Sanders also received a Missouri Leadership Award. Hodge, a senior at Chaffee High School, is the daughter of Carol and Richard Hodge of Chaffee. Sanders, a senior at Chaffee High School, is the son of Wade and Laura Sanders of Chaffee. Skelton, a senior at Jackson High School, is the son of Steven and Susan Skelton of Jackson.

Central student accepted to fine arts academy

Megan Ruth was accepted into the 2005 Missouri Fine Arts Academy. Ruth is a student at Central High School and was selected on the basis of works of art submitted to the academy. She is the daughter of Ken and Brenda Ruth of Cape Girardeau.

Fieser earns President's Plus Scholarship

Hallie Fieser of Jackson has been awarded a President's Plus Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2005-2006 academic year. A senior at Jackson High School, she is the daughter of Dan and Mary Jane Fieser of Jackson.

Faculty, students to get service award at SEMO

Four students and five faculty members at Southeast Missouri State University will receive the President's Volunteer Service Award at the annual criminal justice honors reception on May 13. The event is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Crisp Hall Auditorium. Al Spradling III, a member of the university's board of regents and former Cape Girardeau mayor, will speak at the event. Award winners include a local student, Julie Myers of Oak Ridge. Faculty award recipients are Dr. Andrew Fulkerson, Dr. Mike Brown, Dr. Arrick Jackson, Linda Keena and Dr. John Wade, all of the criminal justice and sociology department. Jackson and Wade will receive silver awards. The others will receive the bronze awards.

Area students earn medals at competition

Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center students recently attended the Missouri SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skill Conference at Linn State Technical College in Linn, Mo. Seven students received medals in the competition: James Cook, third place; James Hill, third place; Tanya Hall, second place; Sean McMackins, first place; Chris Rhodes, first place; Alwali Brown, first place; Craig Thiele, first place and third place.

Johnston awarded President's Scholarship

Mark C. Johnston has received the President's Scholarship from Southeast Missouri State University. Johnston is a senior at Scott City High School. He is the son of Tim and Linda Johnston.

Scott City student receives two awards

Alana Newell of Scott City has been named an All-American Scholar and a U.S. Award Winner in leadership. Newell is a senior at Scott City High School. She is the daughter of Mark and Dorothy Newell and will appear in the All-American Scholar Yearbook and U.S. Achievement Academy Yearbook as part of the awards.

Smith awarded Hiram College scholarship

Lindsey Smith of Cape Girardeau has received the Trustee Scholarship at Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio, for the 2005-2006 academic year. Smith is a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School.
