Central students chosen for fine arts academy
Meredith Lynne Toole and Alisa Uzoaru have been selected to attend the Missouri Fine Arts Academy at Southwest Missouri State University in June.
The Missouri Fine Arts Academy is a three-week residential program for artistically talented students entering their junior or senior year in high school, and is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Toole and Uzoaru are juniors at Central High School in Cape Girardeau.
Toole is the daughter of Adrian and Jamie Toole.
Uzoaru is the daughter of Ben and Nancy Uzoaru.
President's Scholarship recipients announced
Southeast Missouri State University has awarded seven President's Scholarships to local high school students for the 2002-03 school year.
They are:
Michael B. Presnell, son of Mark and Ann Presnell of Jackson, Mo. Presnell will be a 2002 graduate of Jackson High School. He plans to major in pre-pharmacy at Southeast.
Eric P. Bollinger, son of Ray and Della Bollinger of Jackson. Bollinger will be a 2002 graduate of Jackson High School. He plans to major in biology at Southeast.
Jennifer D. Hotop, daughter of Kenneth and Cynthia Hotop of Jackson. Hotop will be a 2002 graduate of Jackson High School.
Clayton C. Randol, son of Doug and Connie Randol of Jackson. Randol will be a 2002 graduate of Jackson High School. He plans to major in pre-engineering at Southeast.
Alexus R. House, daughter of Donna Jo Hinkebein of Cape Girardeau. House will be a 2002 graduate of Central High School. She plans to major in business at Southeast.
Magin L. Patrick, daughter of David and Kim Patrick of Cape Girardeau and Cindy Patrick, also of Cape Girardeau. Patrick will be a 2002 graduate of Central High School. She plans to major in exercise science at Southeast.
Megan K. Day, daughter of Mike and Ruth Day of Burfordville, Mo. Day will be a 2002 graduate of Jackson High School.
Cape Elks select students of the month
Jessica Marie Jansen and Philip Spinks were chosen as the Cape Girardeau Elks' Students of the Month for January and February, respectively.
Jansen is the daughter of B. J. and Doris Jansen of Scott City. She is involved in Future Teachers of America, Science Club, Future Business Leaders of America, volleyball, key club, Student Council, National Honor Society and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Spinks is the son of Gary Spinks of Scott City. He is involved in Future Business Leaders of America and was the Missouri Tech-Prep student of the year for 2002.
Meadow Heights student takes top Vo-Tech honor
Nathan Wagoner, son of Steve and Alice Wagoner of Patton, Mo., and a senior at Meadow Heights High School took first place in electronics at a VICA Vo-Tech competition in Perryville, Mo.
Wagoner received a $500 scholarship, a medal and will participate in the statewide competition in Kansas City at a later date.
Meadow Heights names students of the month
Meadow Heights Junior High and High Schools have chosen their students of the month for March.
Students chosen from the junior high were: Tyler Sander, Josh Garland, Denise Schnurbusch, Erica Wilfong, Chelsey Bollinger, Bryce Wallis, Mike Propst, Hannah Fulbright, Katrina Steele, Blake Cook, Jason Fadler, Nathan Ellis, Tara Messmer and Amanda Hurd.
Students chosen from the high school were: Briana Bellew, Chasity Wilfong, Jamie Creasman and Tommy Thele.
Notre Dame student to spend summer in Europe
Jennifer Rowland, a student at Notre Dame Regional High School, has been selected by the People to People Student Ambassador Program to visit Europe this summer.
Rowland will spend approximately three weeks learning about the government, economy and culture of Belgium, England, France, Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland through activities such as briefing at embassies and ministries, discussions with industry and trade officials, site visits and meetings.
Rowland is the daughter of Jim and Sharon Rowland of Cape Girardeau.
Kelly student to attend national medicine forum
Julia Vetter, a junior at Kelly High School will attend the 2002 National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine July 7 through 16 in Atlanta, Ga.
Vetter will examine state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and future specialties and have the opportunity to study with and learn from medical leaders and research pioneers.
Vetter is the daughter of Michael and Ruth Vetter of Benton, Mo.
Local schools perform well in speech, debate
Twenty-four schools competed in the 2002 Missouri High School Activities Association speech and debate districts at Southeast Missouri State University.
Students from Central High School, Jackson High School and Scott City High School performed well during the competition.
Winners from those schools were, from Jackson: Jennifer Hotop, second place in extemporaneous speaking, third place in radio speaking; Tyler Tankersly, second place in storytelling; and Josh Hill, third place in humorous interpretation.
From Central: Brian Klonoski, first place in Lincoln Douglas debate; and Carley Pind, first place in poetry reading and dramatic interpretation.
From Scott City: Rozz Fusilier, third place in poetry reading.
Notre Dame second in Physics Olympics
A Notre Dame High School team finished second in the Physics Olympics on March 18 at Southeast Missouri State University.
Teams competed in five events, including the design of tin foil barges that could hold the most marbles and a mouse trap-powered car that could travel the greatest distance.
Members of the Notre Dame team were Danny Robert, Lindsay Kuper, Brad Bohannon, John Ray, Toni Horrell and teacher Brad Wittenborn. The team finished second to a team from Festus (Mo.) High School.
SEMO's university relations wins awards
The office of university relations at Southeast Missouri State University won numerous awards in recent competitions.
University relations won 10 awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education at the CASE awards dinner in St. Louis in January.
The school won Gold awards for its Brown Bag poster and Harrison College of Business student recruitment series. It won Silver awards for its international and technology brochures and a magazine that goes to prospective students. A direct-mail piece to prospective students, a student recruitment series, and polytechnic studies, study abroad and departmental brochures won Bronze awards.
Southeast received two Tri-State Advertising and Marketing Professionals ADDY awards for excellence in advertising in Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois and western Kentucky. The awards were for the Brown Bag poster and the Harrison College of Business series.
University relations won 15 awards in 12 categories at the 17th annual Admissions Advertising Awards. Gold awards went to the "On Campus" magazine and study abroad brochures. The College of Business series received a Silver Award and a cultural arts campaign received Bronze Award. The school garnered Merit awards for several other marketing efforts.
