Jackson student receives $500 scholarship

Benjamin Wachter of Jackson was recently presented with a $500 scholarship from the Bootheel Boss Gobblers chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation in Cape Girardeau.

Bartels recognized by state Scholars program

Jackson High School senior Ashley Bartels was selected for the 2004 Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors Missouri's top academic seniors. Bartels and other students chosen for the honor will be recognized at a luncheon in Columbia, Mo., in April.

Area students take part in annual chemistry bowl

Students from 18 local high schools recently competed in the annual Southeast Missouri Chemistry Bowl at Southeast Missouri State University.

Hawkins graduates with honors from Truman State

Matthew Hawkins of Cape Girardeau was named valedictorian at Truman State University's winter commencement ceremonies. He received a bachelor's degree in computer science and a bachelor's degree in mathematics, and graduated summa cum laude. Hawkins is in the son of Paul and Helen Hawkins of Cape Girardeau and graduated with a 4.0 GPA.

Seabaugh co-authors article for Science journal

Jennifer Seabaugh, a geology graduate student at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, co-authored an article published in a February issue of the journal Science. Seabaugh is a graduate of Central High School and Southeast Missouri State University. She does research at the lab of Hailiang Dong, a professor of geology at Miami University. The article demonstrates the role of microorganisms in the geological process.

Pancoast earns spot on UNL fall 2003 dean's list

Kimberly Pancoast of Cape Girardeau was named to the fall 2003 semester dean's list at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Pancoast is a sophomore there with an undecided major.

Area student named to Union U. president's list

Sarah Belcher of Cape Girardeau was among 210 students named to the fall 2003 semester president's list at Union University in Jackson, Tenn.

Obereck takes first place in state competition

Chris Obereck of Jackson, a student at Ranken Technical College in St. Louis, recently competed in the Skills USA Vocational Industrial Club of America's state competition at Linn State Technical College. He took first place in the automated manufacturing skills team category.

Area student named to Deaconess honor roll

Amy Dirnberger of New Hamburg, Mo., was named to the fall 2003 semester honor roll at Deaconess College of Nursing in St. Louis. She is the daughter of Herb and Cindy Dirnbeger of New Hamburg.

Presson recognized as outstanding student

Lucas Presson, a senior at Central High School, was recently named an "Outstanding Student of America" by the Outstanding Students of America organization. Presson is active in FCA, National Honor Society, Vocational National Honors Society, baseball, FBLA and Beta Club. He is a member of Cape Bible Chapel and Southeast Missouri Young Life. Presson plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University next fall. He is the son of Donald and Janet Presson.

Elks name students of the month for March

Amanda Raines and Jeremy Schlosser, both students at Scott City High School, have been named Elks' students of the month. Raines is the March student of the month and the daughter of Mark and Teresa Raines. She is involved in a variety of activities, including basketball, volleyball, National Honor Society, FBLA, FTA, FCCLA and Pep Club. She hopes to attend the University of Missouri after graduating. Schlosser is the son of Darryl and Shawn Schlosser. He is involved in track, basketball, FBLA, FTA, FCCLA and Pep Club. He hopes to pursue a degree in business finance after graduating.

Health-care Scholarships applications available

St. Francis Medical Center Foundation and Auxiliary scholarship applications are now available for the 2004 Healthcare Scholarships, which annually awards approximately 20 $1,000 scholarships for the following academic year. Applicants must have successfully completed one year of an accredited health-care program and have at least a 2.5 grade point average. In addition, all applicants must submit a copy of a recent college transcript and completed application form. Deadline for submission to the St. Francis Foundation is May 17.
