Alisha Bohnert of Jackson recently attended a two-day musical arts event at Concordia University in Seward, Neb. Middle school students win geography bee

Central Middle School winners of a recent National Geographic geography bee were Susan Beth Scott, Julie Langenfeld and Nina Scheibe.

Groves chosen Elks student of the month

Loren Groves, a senior at Scott City High School, was chosen as the Elks student of the month for February. Groves is the daughter of David and Jeannie Groves of Scott City. She has been named to the all-state team in basketball and track and is involved in National Honor Society, pep club, FBLA, FTA and is editor of the school yearbook.

Tikoo named candidate to scholars program

Sonia Tikoo, a senior at Central High School, has been named a candidate in the 2004 Presidential Scholars Program. Sonia is the daughter of Dr. Mohan and Jaikishuri Tikoo and was selected as a candidate from among 2.8 million students in the United States. A panel of educators will select 500 semifinalists for the program in April. The finalists -- two from each state -- will be announced in May. Those students will be invited to Washington, D.C., for a special ceremony in June.

Area PT students attend lobby day in Jeff City

Local students enrolled in the physical therapy program at Maryville University recently attended a lobby day in Jefferson City. From Cape Girardeau were Jason Rubel and Jason Garner. From Scott City was Amber Donelson.

Brain Foundation offers poster, writing contest

Local students are invited to enter the first annual brain awareness month poster and writing contest, sponsored by the International Brain Foundation. Deadline is March 22. For information on entering the contest, contact Courtney Verhines at the Internation Brain Foundation, 339-1957, extension 215.

Cape Christian students vie in speech contest

Fifteen students from Cape Christian School recently competed in the Christian Cooperating School District of St. Louis's speech and word competition after winning at the school level. Cape Christian School received second place overall, with the following students placing first in their respective categories:

Bible recitation:

1st place -- second-grader Jacquelyn Kienfer; third-grader, Christopher Stroud; fifth-grader Jon Morrow.

Poetry:

1st place -- third-grader Matthew Parsons; fifth-grader Caylee Wheeler.

Declamation:

1st place -- fifth-grader Kristopher Cook; sixth-grader Steven Bell.

Dramatic Monologue

1st place -- fifth-grader Paige Kiefner; sixth-grader, Mollie Young.

Original speech:

1st place -- sixth-grader Meg Goodman.

Dirnberger is a 2000 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School and is the son of Mark and Sharon Dirnberger of Cape Girardeau.

Cody Bell of Cape Girardeau has been named to the dean's list at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Bell, a pre-dentistry major, received a 4.0 GPA during the semester. He is the son of Michael and Donna Bell of Cape Girardeau.
