Soemo, Thompson get state academic honor
Angela R. Soemo and Justin R. Thompson, both of Jackson, Mo., have been selected for the 2002 Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of Missouri's top academic students in the graduating class of 2002.
Thompson was chosen as an honorable mention student.
Missouri Scholars 100 is sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals. The selection is based primarily on a formula using the student's grade point average and ACT or SAT score.
Wittenborn awarded scholarship, youth title
Scott Wittenborn of Cape Girardeau has been named the Exchange Club's Youth of the Month for March and awarded a Chancellor's scholarship to attend the University of Missouri-St. Louis for the 2002-03 school year.
Wittenborn is the son of Brad and Michele Wittenborn. He will be a 2002 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School. He plans to major in education at UMSL, where he will be a member of the men's soccer team.
O'Malley awarded scholarship to Belmont
Jocelyn O'Malley, a senior at Central High School, has been admitted to Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., as a music business major for the fall 2002 semester. She has also been awarded a merit scholarship based on her academic record.
O'Malley is a member of chamber choir, orchestra, student senate, soccer and wrestling cheerleading and the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce Student Leadership Academy.
She is the daughter of Jean Schlichter and John O'Malley of Cape Girardeau.
Southeast awards scholarships to four
Jeremiah D. Townsend of Chaffee, Mo., and Ashley G. Michael of Cape Girardeau have been awarded President's Scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2002-03 school year.
Nathan D. Brown of Jackson, Mo., has been awarded a Regents' Scholarship and Paul T. O'Brien, also of Jackson, has been awarded a President's Scholarship and Missouri Leadership Award.
Townsend is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jon Townsend of Chaffee. He will be a 2002 graduate of Chaffee High School. He plans to major in industrial technology at Southeast.
Michael is the daughter of Lydia and Thomas Kern of Cape Girardeau and the late Jerry Michael. She will be a 2002 graduate of Central High School. She plans to major in nursing at Southeast.
Brown is the son of Donald and Marily Brown of Jackson. He will be a 2002 graduate of Jackson High School.
O'Brien is the son of Pam O'Brien and Tom O'Brien, both of Jackson. He will be a 2002 graduate of Jackson High School.
Preschool, kindergarten enrollment screenings
Nell Holcomb School will be hold 2002-03 kindergarten enrollment screenings on April 4 at Hobb's United Methodist Church on State Highway 177.
Appointments are necessary beginning at 8:30 a.m. They can be made by calling the school at 334-3644.
Children must be 5 years old by Aug. 1 to be able to attend kindergarten in the fall. Each child needs to bring a copy of the following to the enrollment: official birth certificate, Social Security card and immunization record.
The school will also be holding preschool screenings for 3- and 4-year-olds at the same time and location. Appointments are necessary.
Elks Lodge names student of the month
Michelle Renee DeLaCruz, daughter of Debbie DeLaCruz of Scott City, Mo., was named March student of the month by the Cape Girardeau Elks Lodge.
DeLaCruz is a member of the National Honor Society, student council, FBLA, FTA and literacy program.
Delta group to present alcohol docudrama
The Delta High School team spirit group will present an alcohol awareness and drunk driving docudrama at 1:30 p.m. March 27 at the high school.
The presentation will include a mock crash involving teen-agers from the school. Police, ambulance and fire rescue teams will be summoned to the mock crash as the scene is played out and will perform their duties as they would in a real life situation.
Following the crash and emergency response a speaker will talk to the students about alcohol abuse among teen-agers and the consequences of drinking and driving.
The Cape County Ambulance Service, Delta Fire Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Wilson's Auto Sales will participate in the event.
Hey named to Institute of Technology dean's list
Heather Hey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Hey of Cape Girardeau, has been named to the dean's list at Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Ind.
To be eligible for the dean's list, students must take a minimum of 12 credit hours, have a 3.25 grade-point average or high for the semester and a 2.0 overall grade-point average.
Maryville names 12 students to dean's list
Maryville University in St. Louis has named 12 area students to its fall dean's list.
Named to the list were:
Cape Girardeau: Jason Garner, Gail Houschboer, Jessica Lawrence, Jason Ruber and Lauri Swallow.
Jackson: Elizabeth Becker, Julie Litzelfelner and Angie Schwab.
Perryville: Stacie Lane, Sara Mann, Lorelei Meyer and Christy Steinbecker.
Delta announces screening dates
Delta Elementary School will hold kindergarten screenings April 9 and 10 for all children who will be 5 years old before Aug. 1.
Parents or legal guardians must bring the child's birth certificate, immunization records and Social Security card with them.

Cairo resident joins college literary society
DeVone Eurales, a freshman at Illinois College in Jacksonsville, Ill., has pledged Sigma Pi Literary Society.
Eurales is the son of Derek and Retha Eurales of Cairo. He is a 2001 graduate of Cairo High School.
Conservatory announces music festival winners
Keyboards and Kindermusik Conservatory in Cape Girardeau has recognized 13 of their students who earned gold cup awards. The National Federation of Music Clubs sponsors a music festival where students are heard and judged. Students are awarded gold cups for three years of superior ratings in piano performance.
The following students received their first gold cup: Hayley Bohnert, Stephen Carman, Jacob Cypret, Carrie Ford, Ali Herzog, Abby Janet, Lindsay Jo Kelley, Sarah Moyers, Stephanie Moyers and Rebekah Pfanstiel.
Jordon Cox and Shannon Ritter received their second gold cup awards. Lucas Presson received his third gold cup.
