Regents' scholarships awarded at SoutheastSoutheast Missouri State University has awarded regents' scholarships to Paula McElreath, Kevin Groves, Keith Fischer, Elizabeth Unterreiner and Doris Dorlac, all of Cape Girardeau, Clayton Stockard and Julianne Penny, both of Jackson, Maria Lett of Scott City, and Sarah Jo Cook of Whitewater, Mo.
The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who have achieved an ACT composite score of 27 or SAT score of 1220. Students must also have a high school grade point average of 3.5 or graduate in the top 10 percent of their class. High school valedictorians who have an ACT score of 25 or SAT score of 1140 also are eligible, as are National Merit and National Achievement semifinalists.
The award covers incidental fees for up to 32 credit hours per academic year for up to four consecutive years.
McElreath, the daughter of James and Charlene McElreath, is a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School.
Groves, the son of Richard Groves, is a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School.
Fischer, the son of John and Betty Fischer, attends Cape Girardeau Central High School.
Unterreiner, the daughter of Robert and Julie Unterreiner of Cape Girardeau, attends Jackson High School.
Dorlac, the daughter of Barbara Eagle of Cape Girardeau, is a senior at Notre Dame Regional High School.
Penny, the daughter of Terry and Joyce Penny, is a senior at Jackson High School.
Stockard, the son of David and Vivian Stockard, attends Jackson High School.
Lett, the daughter of Kenneth and Dorothy Lett, is a senior at Scott City High School.

Students earn leadership awards, scholarshipsSoutheast Missouri State University has awarded President's Scholarships to Brandon Hill and Erin Hyden of Jackson and Candice Duncan of Oran, Mo. Hyden also has received a Missouri Leadership Award.
The President's Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who achieve an ACT composite score of 24 or score 1110 on the SAT. Recipients also must rank in the upper 20 percent of their high school class or achieve a high school grade point average of 3.5. The scholarship also is awarded to students who are valedictorians and achieve an ACT score of 21 or score 990 on the SAT, and to National Merit scholars.
The scholarship is worth $1,500 per academic year for up to four consecutive years.
The Missouri Leadership Award is a one-year award of $500 to be applied toward residence hall fees. Students receiving the scholarship must have achieved a 3.0 grade point average.

Hyden, the daughter of Becky and Harold Hyden, attends Jackson High School.
Duncan, the daughter of Robin Duncan of Oran and Lindy Duncan of Jackson, attends Oran High School.
Melissa Hobbs and Kelly Tummins, both of Cape Girardeau, and Ashley Webber of Jackson also have received Missouri Leadership awards to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2003-2004 academic year.
Hobbs, the daughter of Darrell and Jan Hobbs, is a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School.
Tummins, the daughter of Joyce Tummins of Cape Girardeau and Mike Tummins of Dickson, Tenn., is a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School.
Webber, the daughter of Randy and Rochelle Noce of Jackson, is a senior at Oak Ridge High School.
Community College Scholarship awarded
Cory Barker of McClure, Ill., has been awarded a Community College Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University.
The scholarship is a renewable award of $2,500 for two semesters. The scholarship is awarded to students transferring from a community college. The monetary award is applied to the student's incidental fees.
Barker, the son of Lisa Murphy and Rex Barker of McClure, graduated from Shawnee High School and Shawnee Community College.
Lester appointed to attend U.S. Naval Academy
Mark Lester Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Lester of Cape Girardeau, has been appointed by Sen. Christopher Bond to the U.S. Naval Academy.
Lester is a senior at Notre Dame Regional High School where he is active in student council, science club and foreign language club.
Lester's nomination does not guarantee an appointment to the academy, but places him into a pool of competitive candidates.
Teacher receives award for outstanding performance
Ginger Riehn, a teacher in the Oak Ridge School District, recently received an award for outstanding performance in reading education from Renaissance Learning Inc.
Riehn was awarded Reading Renaissance Model Classroom Level I Certification, which indicates that her efforts to adopt the reading program's methods have resulted in measurable increases in student reading performance.
In recognition of Riehn's achievement, the district will receive a Reading Renaissance merchandise certificate for $50.
SEMO District Fair taking scholarship applicationsThe SEMO District Fair Foundation is now taking applications for scholarships of $600.
Applicants must have completed 30 credit hours by the end of the Spring 2003 semester or be enrolled as a sophomore or junior, attending a two or four year college in Missouri.
Applicants must be pursuing an agriculture or agriculture-related major and be a past participant or have exhibited at the SEMO District Fair. Financial need and a 2.5 GPA required.

UMR student in theater production of 'Camelot'
A.J. Bedwell of Scott City will participate in the performance of "Camelot" at the University of Missouri-Rolla, which opens March 6 at Leach Theater of Castleman Hall on the university campus.
Bedwell is a sophomore at UMR, majoring in biological sciences.
Essay contest winner awarded $100
Claire Bira, a student at St. Vincent de Paul School in Cape Girardeau, is the 8th-grade winner in an essay contest sponsored by the U.S. Rice Producers Association.
Bira's essay was chosen from among others submitted by students in Missouri, Mississippi, Texas, California, Louisiana and Arkansas.
She was awarded $100 for her essay, and St. Vincent de Paul received $500 for the school's computer lab.
Jackson student earns spot on chancellor's list
Leslie Hanschen of Jackson was among the 950 undergraduate students named to the fall 2002 semester chancellor's list at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.
Hanschen is a student at the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.
Student to study with pope's Latin secretary
Paul Johns, a 1999 graduate of Jackson High School and a senior at Southwest Missouri State University in Spingfield, Mo., will study this summer under the pope's Latin expert in Rome, Italy.
Johns, who is pursuing a doctorate in classics, is the son of Tammy and Roger Johns of Kerrville, Texas, and the grandson of Bill and Veneida Reynolds of Cape Girardeau.
Arteme, Rigdon graduated with honors
Amy Arteme of Benton, Mo., and Darcy Rigdon of Cape Girardeau recently graduated with honors from Southeast Missouri State University.
Arteme, who graduated magna cum laude, earned a bachelor's degree in human environmental studies.

Sara Little of Cape Girar-deau has been named to the fall 2002 vice president for academic affairs list at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.
Little is a junior and is the daughter of Jim and Melba Little.
Christy Schlosser of Cape Girardeau was recently named to the president's list for the fall 2002 semester at Truman State University.
Schlosser is a freshman communications major and is involved with the Free Thinkers Organization as a member of the executive board, the University Chorus and the Advertising and Public Relations Club.

Culbertson selected for education award
Tripp Culbertson, a student at Kelly High School, recently won a $200 education award from Student Paths, a program that high schools implement to help students with the transition to post-secondary life.
Culbertson, along with three other Missouri students, was randomly selected for the award from 50,000 students.
