Stroder brothers graduate with honors

Two local students, sons of Lonnie and Susan Stroder of Jackson, recently graduated with honors. Timothy Stroder graduated summa cum laude from Southeast Missouri State University with a masters in degree in chemistry. He now works as a chemist at Lone Star Industries in Cape Girardeau. Ryan Stroder graduated magna cum laude from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor of arts in biological sciences. After completing mission work with the International Book of Hope, he will attend the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in Phoenix, Ariz.

Scholarship offered to agriculture students

Missouri Farmers Union Family Farm Opportunity Center will offer a $500 Gary Wiggans Scholarship to a student wishing to pursue post-secondary education with plans to enter production agriculture or other related service to rural communities upon completion of their degree. Students must complete an application form and write an essay before Jan. 6. Applications are available online at www.missourifarmersunion.org

Nell Holcomb students win gift card from Petco

Students in Nell Holcombs's gifted program, Learning is Fun and Educational, created a Halloween creature, "Count Pigula," and entered the count into a contest at Petco. Count Pigula's creators, Forest King, Clayton Reece and Kailen Boren won a $25 gift card from Petco. The class voted to use the gift card to buy another guinea pig for the classroom.

Jackson school wins top prize in contest

Jackson's Immaculate Conception School finished first in Midwest Living Magazine's "Champions in Education" contest for the school's volunteer art program. A $1,000 award will go to purchase new materials and supplies.

McDonald's presents special night for teachers

McTeacher's night will be held at participating McDonald's restaurants from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 16. A percentage of the proceeds from the evening's sales will be donated to local education partners.
