Daume gets degree in chemical engineering

Bryan Daume of Cape Girardeau graduated summa cum laude in May from the University of Missouri-Rolla with a bachelor of science in chemical engineering. He was also one of two students recognized as honor scholars in chemical engineering. Daume was a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, treasurer, and president of Omega Chi Epsilon and AICHE.

This fall he will attend Washington University in St. Louis to pursue a doctorate in biomedical engineering.

Student achieves place on CMSU dean's list

Christopher Vowels of Altenburg, Mo., a student at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo., has earned a place on CMSU's 4.0 GPA dean's list.

Goehring graduates with business degree

Lesley Ann Goehring received a bachelor of business administration degree in management Aug. 10 from Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.

While attending Texas A&M, Goehring twice received the Lowry Mays College and Graduate School of Business Distinguished Student Award, was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, received the Pete Hunter Dunham, Class of 1974 Scholarship and the Herman F. Heep Scholarship and was an intern for the Walt Disney Company in Orlando, Fla.

She is the daughter of David and Joan Goehring of Cape Girardeau.

Goehring has accepted a sales management position with Pier 1 Imports in Dallas, Texas.

Eight-grader a science challenge semifinalist

Katie Diane Mohundro, an eighth-grader at St. Vincent de Paul Parish School in Cape Girardeau, was selected as a semifinalist in the 3rd Annual Discovery Young Scientist Challenge for her project entitled "Quilled or Spilled: How Permanent is Ink?"

Mohundro is among 400 middle school students in 46 states that were selected by Discovery Communications, Inc., a company that identifies and honors America's top middle school students who demonstrate the best skills in leadership, teamwork and scientific problem solving.

Of the 400 semifinalists, 40 will be selected to travel to Washington, D.C. on Oct. 20 to participate alongside the Smithsonian Institution's leading scientists in sophisticated challenges related to the most cutting edge scientific mysteries of the day, including renewable energy, genetic mapping and animal conservation.

Two win Farm Day coloring contest

Chelsea Jones, Orchard Elementary, and Kara Goodier, South Elementary in Jackson, Mo., were winners of the annual Farm Day coloring contest sponsored by the Farm Bureau. Each of the winners received a $10 gift certificate.

High school book club opens next week

Central High School Book Club will open the 2001-02 reading season with a discussion of "She Said Yes" in the CHS library at 3 p.m. Sept. 19. Wendy Taliaferro will lead discussions on the book written by a mother of a victim of the Columbine tragedy.

On Oct. 10, "A Prayer for Owen Meany" will be discussed.

Zalma student named a Coca-Cola scholar

Amber Buehler, a senior at Zalma High School in Zalma, Mo., was one of 201 regional scholars to receive a $4,000 scholarship and one of 252 students from across the country to benefit from the Coca-Cola Scholars Program.

Buehler joined 201 high school students in Atlanta for Coca-Cola Scholars Weekend April 27-29. The students interviewed with several education, business, government and arts leaders from across the country and were evaluated on their academic achievements, school and community leadership and desire to succeed.

Scholars were chosen from an initial pool of more than 117,000 high school seniors representing more than 16,500 high schools nationwide.

The scholars also received the President's Student Service Challenge Award, which included an additional $500 scholarship, certificate and gold pin. The President's Student Service Award honors high school juniors and seniors who have contributed at least 100 hours of service during the last year.

Area students receive scholarship grants

Twenty-four area students have received more than $37,000 in scholarship grants for the 2001-02 academic year from the Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation and Auxiliary.

Retired teachers to hold annual meeting

The Missouri Retired Teachers Association will hold its annual meeting Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Ramada Convention Center in Columbia, Mo. Registration and a reception for the Missouri Retired Educators of the Year will be held in the north lobby at 8:30 a.m.

The general session with President Gale Bartlow of Blue Springs, Mo., will begin at 10 a.m. The theme is "Working Together for One Bright Future."

GED classes open in Jackson Monday

The Adult Education and Literacy-GED Program will open in Jackson Monday. Classes will be held in the art room at R.O. Hawkins Junior High School on West Lane Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8:30 p.m.

Any adult who desires addition instruction in reading, mathematics or writing skills to pass the GED, prepare for the military, employment, college or technical school is encouraged to attend the free classes. One-on-one instruction is provided for each student.

Tutoring is available for students needing to learn English or for those unable to read. For more information, call 334-3669 or enroll during regular class time.
