A $1,900 water bill from leaking pipes last month is causing the the Scott City School District to renovate its preparation kitchen.
Over the summer a number of leaks were repaired, school superintendent Diann Bradshaw said. But every time one was repaired, another sprang up.
The repairs will be a "costly headache," but so is a $1,900 water bill, she said.
The project is slated to begin the third week in October because the students have a half day on Thursday of that week and are off that Friday, Bradshaw said. Doing the project then is more appropriate than closing school, she said.
Student breakfasts and lunches will be affected by the project; Bradshaw said she is working with the head cook to come up with solutions.
The students are used to having options with their lunches and for those few days options will be limited, she said.
For example, for breakfasts during those days the menu might be cold cereal and muffins that were made ahead of time, frozen and then thawed, Bradshaw said. Lunches may be sub sandwiches one day and hamburgers the next.
The school board is still in the planning stages and is seeking estimates for the project.
