UNION COUNTY, Ill. -- A hazardous materials leak caused an Interstate 57 rest stop to be evacuated Sunday.

A spokesman for the Illinois State Police said a tractor-trailer driver parked early Sunday morning at the rest stop, located on the southbound side of the interstate. The driver was hauling poisonous liquid and noticed some of it leaking from the trailer.

Personnel with the state police, Union County Sheriff's Department and Anna Fire Department evacuated the rest stop and worked to contain the spill.

The rest stop will reopen sometime this morning, the state police spokesman said.
