Education will zoom into the spotlight during a two-day, Missouri Chamber of Commerce Leadership Missouri program to be conducted at the Drury Lodge today and Thursday.
The 1993 Leadership Missouri class includes 36 leaders from across the state who is meeting two days a month for seven months in various communities, covering a wide range of issues, governmental functions and economic philosophies.
"Missouri's State of Intellect" is the topic for this week's session. Speakers on the agenda include:
Neyland Clark, Superintendent of Cape Girardeau Public Schools, who will discuss local public school innovations during the 9 a.m. session this morning.
Kala Stroup, president of Southeast Missouri State University, who will discuss "critical choices in higher education," at 3:15 p.m. today.
Mo. Senator Peter Kinder, who will discuss "financing public education in Missouri," during the 11;45 luncheon session Thursday.
Other speakers on the two-day program include Randy Shaw, chairman of industrial technology at Southeast Missouri State University; Jim Zink, director of Kent Library at the university; Doug crews, executive director of the Missouri Press Association; and Bekki Cook, a member of the Missouri State Board of Education, and a number of others.
The visitors will tour Clippard Elementary School, Louis J. Schultz School, the Vocational Education School and the Mural and Faulkner Rare Book Collection at Kent Library.
The program starts at 7:30 today, with a buffet breakfast, to be followed by a welcome by Harry Rediger, chairman of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce.
Other programs today include a tour of Clippard School at 9:45 a.m., and a talk by Richard Giles, principal of Clippard; a welcome program at Schultz School by Carolyn Vandeven, at 11:15 a.m., followed by an address by Gary Rust, Concord Publishing House. Also appearing on today's program will be Harold Tilley, director of Cape Girardeau Area Vocational School; James Biundo, assistant vice president for university relations; a tour of the Show Me Center by David Ross, director of the center.
Thursday morning programs include speakers Doug Crews at 8:30 a.m.; Susan L. Clubb, adult basic educator coordinator of the Vo-Tech school; Teresa Hirsch, literacy coordinator of Cape Public Schools; Bekki Cook; Steve Poort, president, Three Rivers Community College; Sheila Caskey, dean graduate school and extended learning, Southeast Missouri State University; and Sen. Kinder.
