MODESTO, Calif. -- The attorney for Scott Peterson has publicly called for witnesses to come forward, saying he believes at least one young woman has information that Laci Peterson was abducted and murdered.
"We have extremely credible information that we are following up on," defense attorney Mark Geragos said at a Friday news conference.
Police have said they believe Scott Peterson, Laci's husband, is the only person responsible.
The fertilizer salesman says his 27-year-old pregnant wife vanished when he went fishing Christmas Eve. Her body and the remains of their unborn son washed ashore in San Francisco Bay last month near where he said he was fishing.
Peterson has pleaded innocent to two counts of murder and faces the death penalty if convicted. Geragos' comments came after a short hearing in which a judge temporarily sealed more court documents in the double murder case. Prosecutors said the investigation was ongoing and claimed that revealing evidence would jeopardize Scott Peterson's chances of getting a fair trial.
Judge Al Girolami sealed documents containing evidence police used to get a warrant to arrest Scott Peterson and to conduct another search after his arrest.
In legal briefs filed Thursday, police said the affidavits they had filed outlined evidence and included statements from key witnesses. They said revealing that information could hurt their investigation as they follow up on several thousand tips.
Girolami sealed the papers and said he would reconsider motions by three California newspapers to unseal them at a May 27 hearing.
