JACKSON -- Laura A. Beggs, 26, a native of Jackson, has filed as a Republican candidate for Cape Girardeau county clerk.

Beggs filed at 3:55 p.m. Friday, just one hour and five minutes before a special five-day filing period for county clerk candidates on the Republican ticket closed.

Filing was reopened on April 4 for five days, as required by state statutes, after Greg Lincoln withdrew from the race two days after filing on the Republican ticket.

Lincoln, of Cape Girardeau, filed on March 29, the last day of filing for offices on the 1994 ballot. But he withdrew two days later. He gave no reason for his withdrawal.

County Clerk Rodney Miller, who oversees the election process in Cape County, then established the special filing period in accordance with state law.

Beggs, who is the daughter of Sam and Margaret Beggs of Jackson, was working in St. Louis Monday and could not be reached for comment about her candidacy. She will face Miller, who is seeking a fifth term as county clerk, in the November general election.
