A Cape Girardeau apartment complex received moderate smoke damage after a fire broke out late Tuesday night.
At 9:06 p.m. crews responded to 516 Cape Meadows Circle, where they found a lower-level apartment on fire, battalion chief Brad Dillow said. Within 15 minutes crews contained the fire inside apartment 49, whose resident escaped before firefighters arrived on the scene.
Five other apartments that were unoccupied sustained smoke damage. Dillow estimates the damage at about $35,000.
While Cape Girardeau crews battled the blaze Jackson and Scott City firefighters were called in to fill-in at the city's fire stations.
An investigation continues into the fire.
