Those casting votes in the election Tuesday may notice larger-than-normal crowds at their polling locations.
April elections typically draw about 8 percent to 12 percent of the county's registered voters, but this year she expects to see a bump in those numbers, said Cape Girardeau County Clerk Kara Clark Summers.
"I'm thinking that with the things we have on the ballot this time ... it's going to be closer to 20 to 22 percent turnout countywide," she said.
The county will be asked to make a decision on a 1 percent use tax, which would be levied on out-of-state purchases that exceed $2,000 annually. Voters in Cape Girardeau and Jackson also will vote on a use tax question.
Clark Summers said that issue, combined with local races, will bring more voters to the polls in certain areas.
She expects Jackson could be "very busy" because of a crowded school board race. Eight candidates -- including three incumbents -- are running for three spots.
Four incumbents for the Jackson Board of Aldermen are running for re-election, but each candidate is unopposed.
In Cape Girardeau, voters will determine the next mayor. Incumbent Harry Rediger faces opposition from businessman Walter White.
Voters in wards 1 and 2 also have a decision to make for their next city council member.
Joseph Uzoaru and Teresa Robinson face off in Ward 1, while Shelly Moore and Rocky Everett hope to become the next Ward 2 representative. Incumbent Wayne Bowen is running unopposed in Ward 6.
Other contested races in Cape Girardeau County include Oak Ridge School Board, Delta School Board and Cape Special Road District.
Clark Summers also said it is important for voters to double-check their polling locations, as a few have changed.
Voters in Precinct 2 in Cape Girardeau will vote at Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel, 1904 W. Cape Rock Drive. The previous polling location was Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Voters in the Oak Ridge precinct will vote at First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge Fellowship Hall, 4154 Route E, instead of the former location of Oak Ridge School.
