Incumbent Mark Lanzotti and newcomer Trent Summers turned in their petitions to run for Cape Girardeau City Council on Tuesday, the first day of the filing period.

Lanzotti, a local lawyer, and Summers, an account executive at Red Letter Communications, submitted their petitions that each had at least the 50 signatures required, according to City Clerk Gayle Conrad. The next step is verifying the signatures to make sure the signers are registered voters that live in the relevant ward.

Lanzotti is seeking to retain his Ward 5 seat and Summers is looking to assume the Ward 3 seat being vacated by Debra Tracy. Another incumbent, Loretta Schneider, who represents Ward 4, has said she intends to run again, but Conrad said Schneider did not file Tuesday.
