Karl Kunkel has resigned as provost at Southeast Missouri State University effective May 14.
He will assume a faculty position Aug. 1 at Southeast, according to a university news release.
Kunkel sent a resignation email to Academic Affairs on Friday morning announcing the resignation and his intention to return to the faculty.
�It has been my professional honor and privilege to serve as your Provost for the past two years and I will continue to serve in this capacity until May 14,� the email stated.
University president Carlos Vargas-Aburto has appointed Tamara Randolph, interim dean of the college of science, technology and agriculture, to serve as interim provost, the release stated.
Kunkel has served as provost for two years at Southeast, beginning his duties Feb. 16, 2016, with a starting salary of $190,000, according to a 2015 university news release.
Prior to his hiring at Southeast, Kunkel was dean of the college of arts and sciences and professor of sociology and justice studies at Pittsburg State University in Kansas beginning in 2011, according to the 2015 news release, and served for 17 years at Missouri State University as head of the department of sociology, anthropology and criminology and professor of sociology and criminology.
