Two national retailers will build new stores in west Cape Girardeau in the next year, Cape Girardeau Mayor Jay Knudtson announced Thursday.

Kohl's and Sears Grand department stores have agreed on separate tentative proposals to build facilities on opposite sides of Siemers Drive. Pending approval of the Cape Girardeau City Council at a special meeting on Friday, both companies will begin construction immediately.

The Wisconsin-based Kohl's plans to erect an 80,000 square-foot building on a recently annexed 10-acre lot due west of Lowe's off Shirley Drive in the Cape West Business Park.

Sears Grand will put up a 150,000 square foot store in a lot south of Goody's off of Siemers Drive. It will replace the Sears store in the Town Plaza.

The Sears Grand is an extension of the company's mall-based type of store, offering the same products and services as the regular Sears, plus merchandise like health and beauty products, snacks, pantry items and other family-oriented products.

If approved, both companies plan to complete these projects and be open by Christmas 2005.
